After reading around some and talking to some folks, I decided to have my stock muffler replaced with a flowmaster 40 series.

it sounds perfect at idle and good at some RPMs, but at around 1100 rpm, and again around 2100 it resonates through the cab something terrable. which is a big prioblem consudering 2100 is right where it its at 70mph... If I put my foot in it the exhaust goes from "ricy" loud to quiet, then back to loud 3 times throughout the rev range, sounds confused and odd.

the Orignal muffler was cut out, and the flowmaster welded in so Im kinda stuck with it..

I had a similar issue on a turbo Eclipse I had, and putting a resonator before the muffler helped out quite a bit, it made it slightly quieter, but not much, but it rteally cut down on the in cabl resonence.

is this the best way to go? or what are some other ideas?

    Thanks:

    UPDATE

I called the shop and talked to the guy who did the install, explained to him my issue. He siad every truck, is different.. even 2 vehicles of the same make and model with the exhaust may sound totally different, he suggested I have them put a glass pack in in addation to the muffler, will cost me an extra $75 and I get no guarntees that it will fix the problem, but it "should tone it down a bit"

    Hope it works.

Yea, in the absence of advice, that's all I've got.

Your problem is that you put a flowmaster on. Put a Borla or magnaflow on and that will all go away.

I put a 40 series on my truck a couple months ago and was having the same effects. The resonance was loud at particular sets of RPMS. However, I noticed that the loud cab noise and (i think all) resonation has gone away after a few weeks of being broken in. I have heard from previous owners that there is an initial break in period after which the muffler calms down and sounds different. I'm pretty sure I have no resonance in my cab (or maybe I just got used to it). I would wait a month before buying any "fixes".

someone else told me the same thing today, that the pitch will change over time, pity it wasn't the guy at the muffler shop, ill give that a try.

    Thanks!

While I don't have a Flowmaster (I have Aero Turbine), I too got annoyed with the sound at different rpms (mainly just how loud it was). I put an Aero Turbine resonator on and I was amazed at how much quieter it was. If the glasspack doesn't do the trick, this resonator may be worth a look. That is the same eBay seller I've bought all my exhaust stuff from.

    Good luck!

I had the exact same problem with the FM40 muffler. Wasn't annoyingly loud, just annoying! i hated that exhaust. I got rid of that as soon as I could.

I'm running an Aero 2525XL now, and it sounds great. If with the DTLT it is still very driveable.

I'm having a similar problem. I just put a magnaflow muffler on and the sound is just right at low and high RPMs. The problem is between 2500 and 3500 RPMs the sound is so so so loud. People say that this break in time helps but would it make the sound more equal throughout all ranges of RPM? What about other exausts? Does the TRD cat back offer a more constant noise level?

call it break in or call it what you want the process is actually putting a coating of soot on the inner walls of the muffler. changing a hard reflective surface to a softer less reflective coating of soot. But the FM never loses the harsh sound, I had mine fall apart internally after 2 years and got a Basic "el Cheapo" turbo muffler which works about the same but is much quieter. if you removed the cat you will pay by having it be extremely loud ( wonder how I know this ). Put a cat in and its much more liveable.
