    2007 4dr 4x4, 4.0 Automatic 5spd

    I've had 33's on the truck pretty much since new. Because of this site I purhcased from a member a set of 4.10's from a 4 banger however I don't have a carrier for it.
    I've been waiting to open the diffs up when I was ready to install lockers but now I'm considering going to 4.56 gears. Not likely ever going to 35's.
    I know the 4.10's will get me virtually back to stock.

    Let's just say this is my daily driver, for it's entire life it has been my DD and work truck. But with that said it almost has 60k miles. Here recently I have been given a work truck.

    Now here are some numbers that I have ran:

    Stock 3.73 Gears with 265/65/16 (29.56")
    25mph = 763 RPM
    55mph = 1679 RPM
    70mph = 2137 RPM

    4.10 Gears with 285/70/17 (32.71")
    25mph = 758 RPM
    55mph = 1668 RPM
    70mph = 2123 RPM

    4.56 Gears with 285/70/17
    25mph = 843 RPM
    55mph = 1855 RPM
    70mph = 2361 RPM

    I also have a set of 265/70/16 on the TRD Offroad rims that I ocassionally slap on there when the feeling strikes me.
    For fun here are those numbers, this is a lot less likely to occur if I do indeed go with the 4.56 gears. No more tires under 33".

    This is what I have been swaping to on occassions.

    3.73 Gears with 265/70/16 (31.61")
    25mph = 713 RPM
    55mph = 1568 RPM
    70mph = 1996 RPM

    This is what it would become if I pulled that same swap. With either of the new sets of gears.

    4.10 Gears with 265/70/16
    25mph = 783 RPM
    55mph = 1724 RPM
    70mph = 2194 RPM

    4.56 Gears with 265/70/16
    25mph = 901 RPM
    55mph = 1982 RPM
    70mph = 2523 RPM

    Oh and gentlemen this is what happens with too many days offshore without any work to be done yet having to be up and ready with only the internet to entertain yourself with.

    Any and all opinions and experiences are more than welcome.

    i ran 3.73 with 35s and it was a bit tall,
    Since its my DD and drive 60-120 km with an average of 80km an hour unless on the free way i opted for the 4.10s and id do it again in a heart beat! For reference I'm running the red letter generals and their most definitely not the lightest tire out there.

    With 33s id Never go 4:56s even if it was free but thats imo

    I just put 4.10's in my 2013 6spd. Had 4.56 on order but ended up reluctantly changing to 4.10. Glad that I did. The 6spd and the 4.56 w/ 285's would have been horrid. Like 3200rpm at 120km/h

    But with an auto it would be much more doable. If I had an auto id be rocking 4.56 . It is a big debate and a hard call to make. There are a lot more people with 4.56 with an auto than 4.56 with a 6spd so your decision should be a lot easier than mine was.

    Keep in mind load should also play a role in deciding.

    At 120km/hr I'm at 2850rpm. It is high but not much off stock with stock tires, and keep in mind rpm doesn't kill and engine, load does. Mileage is up. And power has been restored. Wish I did it sooner.

    120km/hr for me (Automatic) would be about 2600rpm.

    300 RPM over stock running 4.56 with 33's isn't that much of a stretch.
    I'm still considering the 4.10's because I have them on hand and I have that second set of smaller tires. Their original puropse was to wheel with, however I feel they are a bit to small to be of any real use.

    That's the purpose of this post though, to hear real world experience.

    I'm surprised to hear that you felt those (3.73) gears were too tall. I feel that I could use a bit more in my truck. I'm also running a load range E tire at the moment so the weight is there also.

    It would have counted back when I had my 01. But I don't think even gears could have helped mine out. She was a lovely truck but sucked up fuel like it was no ones buisness not to mention she was slow as all get out. Never could figure out what was wrong with her so I sold her. Solid truck, very reliable, but horrible on fuel for a stock truck. 11-12 mpg

    I'm assuming your truck is a stick, but what engine do you have? With that said alot of manual's go right for the 4.56 gears, maybe they can elaborate on that some more. Hell man what year do you have?

    I ran 33s (285s) on 4.56s for about 12k miles, it sucks your mileage but the power gain is nice. I since swapped to 35s.

    How bad was your mileage with the 33's? I average 16-17 mpg as it is, without armor and hardly no load. Only an ARE shell roughly 133 lbs, and a small diamond plated tool box that I an lift and put in the bed by myself fairly easily.

    My internet is really slow today so i'm unable to refigure the numbers based off the 6spd's ratios. Not to mentinon I don't know what they are.

    I have the 2.7 with 33 inch tires, and 4.56 gears. The RPMs noted in OP is spot on really. As for MPG, I saw a nice improvement in most of my city driving when I was 55 MPH or less. I see about 20.6 MPG. If I get on the interstate though, because of the higher RPMs, I drop down to around 19.4 MPG.

    The Original post is figured for the 4.0 Auto.
    It seems thought that the 4.56 is a good choice for the 2.7 sticks!

    How did it change when you put on the 35's? With all of the rotational mass I would think it averaged out to about the same.

    Just to sum up your experience so far.
    4.0 Auto 2nd Gen
    4.56 with 33's max of 15 mpg
    4.56 with 35's max of to be determined...........

    berk: you're making as good a mileage as I have pretty much ever made. I can see how you'd imporve in low RPM miles while giving up some at higher speeds.
