Exactly happens all the time. I hate the dealer for this reason.

Well, it appears I was a little too eager to place my vote on the TSB fixing the ping. Unfortunately, my truck is now pinging on 87 octane. I just refueled with 91 to see if that helps and will try and find the time to contact my dealer and/or Toyota. In case anyone is still interested, my fuel mileage didn't appear to be impacted by the TSB and I do not see any stickers indicating a re-flash of the ECU was performed (maybe I'm looking in the wrong place).:(

My truck only has one sticker on the hood from the factory (never been in for a reflash) FYI

I do agree with you on how some things should be done anyway. For example I never looked at a vehicle's driving characteristics when I did maintenance at the dealerships. If I did an oil change, EVERY zerk fitting got grease. Period.

And you know this because you have a video camera located in every dealership in the US and watch each of the millions of vehicles that get serviced every day? Come on, get serious.

Well shoot. Sorry to hear this. Let us know what Toyota or the dealer says.

Had the TSB, pinging seems to have nearly disappeared (thought I hear the slightest bit on the way from the dealership to the office this morning) - but will know for sure on the way home tonight. Sounds promising so far; but wanted to add that I checked under my hood for the modification decal/sticker and did NOT see one either. Will double-check on the way home, but made me nervous.

From my experience at the dealership yes....

Driveline Vibration TSB, i had to provide a proper angle finder to the head service tech who ordered the wrong one, then i proceeded to spend 45min under my truck on a lift at the dealership showing him how to properly do the TSB as he had no clue.... and during that time i was in the bay with the head service tech and oil change boy, i caught the oil change boy about to start my truck with no oil in it. You could say i trust the dealerships about as far as i can throw my truck. When i take my truck in for this tsb, there will be a gopro recording everything thats going on in the cab.

Thanks for the feedback - keep us updated if anything changes.

Odd - not sure why they wouldn't label the vehicle after making an alteration. I suppose the tsb is somehow recorded on the service history of the vehicle.

Good to know. I'll ask about the decal or plate marker when I bring in my truck.

Contacted the dealer I normally use, and decided not to take it to them. Had a VERY bad experience with a tech there last time I was there. Turns out he is the foreman.
Contacted a different dealership in town, and I'm currently waiting to see if they can replicate the sound. Tried to get a recording of the sound on my way in, but couldn't get the truck to ping-knock-kablam

So far, I've gone about 30ish miles after they supposedly did the TSB thingy. Tried to get the clankyness to jump out at every opportunity. So far, I haven't got the ping to occur again. Truck seems to fire up, take off, accelerate, climb hills, and in general, run smoother. (Knock in wood). They also performed some little recall brake work (electronic crap). I put off filling the tank 'til after the tsb in order to possibly catch any mpg change. My last tank averaged 17.135 mpg which was mostly hwy below 70mph. Normal for me is 15.5-16ish. We shall see if anything changes.
BTW, truck is 2012 DCSB 4x4 SR5 6spd. OME lift w/886 coils & dakar leaf packs. Plate bumper w/winch(steel cable). Bed rack w/ RTT. (5) 255/85r16 on 4 aluminum OR wheels, & 1 spare steely. Safari snorkel. Some other miscellaneous crap

I sure hope so. I think I forgot to mention that they did NOT put a sticker/label/decal under the hood indicating a re-flash

Okay - update to my first day with the TSB. My OCD trained me to expect the pinging on very specific portions of my commute home (merging onto highway, getting up to traveling speed, the steep bank on my exit) - can confirm that no pinging occurred. I thought for a moment that I heard a SLIGHT pinging - but that could've been my brain playing tricks because I was expecting it to occur like normal.

I read from a previous post that the TSB needs time to "take" or set roots (not mechanical enough to know if that's true or witchcraft) - but will reserve final judgement for tomorrow's drive to the office.

I also have tracked MPG for every tank of gas I've ever put in the girl since I bought it new - so I'll know immediately if this improved MPG. Always been 87, but tracked the gas brand at each fill up as well. I should have a good apples-to-apples comparison upon the next fill up. Will update then.

See, you made the point I was trying to make right there. I was specifically calling out your comment that indicated ALL dealerships were like that. Since now you are stating that you are basing your opinion only on YOUR experience I can accept that. It does suck that you had such a bad experience at a dealership, but I promise you that not ALL dealerships have bad techs, or unknowing techs. I was mainly just trying to call out that point. Going back and reading I can see how what I said could come out as being an ass. My apologies. I just don't like when people make it seem like just because THEY have a bad experience at a dealership means that ALL dealerships are stupid.
