i build home speakers using single "fullrange" or extended range drivers with nice results.

i am considering replacing the factory "tweeter" in the upper door with something like http://www.parts-express.com/faital...rofessional-full-range-woofer-4-ohm--294-1100 or something similar. likely crossed about 200-300Hz and up.

i also plan on replacing the lower door speaker with a 6x9 woofer [either CDT,Kicker or similar] to act as a midbass. 100Hz or so up to the 3" frequency.

just wanting to know if anyone has ever tried this. thanks

It would work, but that speaker wants to be put into a box so it may not sound very well in a car. Now I ask why? I would just upgrade to a nice component set.

Also ditch the 6x9's and go with a 6.5 or at least a round speaker. 6x9's aren't good for SQ.

a small enclosure would be simple enough

i want to use the 6x9 as a midbass, more piston area the better. as i explained it will play a limited bandpass, probably 80-250Hz or so. also you might want to tell Polk Audio that 6x9's aren't meant to sound good. they use them in their flagship model home speakers. the whole "round speakers are better" argument is years old and not really valid anymore.

i don't want to go with a typical component set because i can't stand the knee high soundstage of these trucks. bringing a powerful mid up to the top of the door should help that a bit.

if they aren't bright enough or extend up far enough i can always add a tweeter to the sail panel or A-pillar. this was the mid and tweeter are not 2 feet apart

as it is now everyone sings to my ankles.

    cute reply

sorry if i am going against the grain here, i see hundreds of examples of people spending way too much on prebuilt boxes and cookie cutter installs.

i also plan to keep the stock radio, pure rebel right here.

i was asking if anyone has tried it. i was not asking about personal opinion or for advice. i have already seen the advice dished out daily, seems like a mediocre car audio marketing extravaganza. there may be a handful of truly unique installs posted here. the rest are Best Buy specials IMO.

Aw9d I think you're a little out of your league here. Dude seems to know his shit and he's right about 6x9s. They're only crappy because almost all companies make their 6x9s low end. It's not the size that's the problem.

I will tell ya this though OP, the signal coming out the stock head unit is pure and utter garbage. I know cuz I'm (very temporarily) using an LC7i with my stock deck and a pair of badass Focal PS 165FX components powered by 75 watts per channel of JL Audio power and they sound like total crap.

Unless you're gonna use an Audison Bit Ten or something do yourself a favor and ditch the stock head unit.

we shall see. i have much testing to do still. gotta find a decent oscilloscope and start poking around the internal board if the speaker outs are as bad as everyone says they are. i tested/scoped my 2013 radio and didn't see the "bass limiting" Audiocontrol insists is there. but that was with a cheapo laptop based PicoScope so i couldn't push the output to near distortion.

i really want to keep the stock deck. tagging the pre-amp traces on the circuit board is my last resort for a hopefully clean signal.

yes i have more time than money. i also find this very fun.

I'd be very interested in your findings. I gave up and ordered a new head unit that should be here today. Couldn't stand the hiss and the garbage sound coming out of my $600 speakers. :D

I have heard good things about the fountek FR88 neo-mag 3" ers, but haven't put my ears on any. I need to hear a really well set up car running a dedicated full range instead of a dedicated tweet to make my own mind up. In the meantime I'll be running a traditional component set.

At Madisound the Silver Flutes have a great rep - and I've really been eyeing the MarkAudio stuff - looks amazingly close to Hybrid Audio's stuff. http://www.madisoundspeakerstore.co...markaudio-alpair-6m-gold-3.5-fullrange-gen-2/

yup, speakers are like tools and batteries. there are hundreds of brands and only a few factories that actually make the products.

it is no wonder so many look and perform similarly

i will keep this thread updated with my findings.

I have the fountek fr88's ready to be installed on the sail panels. I also have some scanspeak discovery 8's going in the doors. I got my adapter(for the 8" midbass) and speaker rings(for the fountek fr88's) from Mr Marv, here on the forums. I'm sure you can get adapters anywhere(and careful driver selection), which I think makes installation much easier than drilling into metal.

Since funds are tight for this venture, I am going to still install the founteks on the sails, and see how they fit in with the stock 6.5's with stock wiring. I also have pioneer 80prs installed. I have amps and a sub box(waiting on sundown sd3 10's to come out) waiting for a wiring kit.

when you're saying sail panel - you mean where the tweet is in this 3 way setup correct??

I have personally played around with quite a few drivers and set ups in my second gen.
Have you thought about going pa/car audio hybrid type drivers ?

For example i have some 8s that i use in my doors. They have a very nice flat freq response curve and will play down to 43hz and all the way up to 2khz. The tweeters i use are about the size of a 3 inch mid range and can play down to 800hz. Now if your dead set on a 3 inch the one you listed is not bad at all.

Im 100% against mainstream and do just about everything different from most people. I laugh at people's view on sound quality and more so even SPL. I do agree with you, there are a hand full of people that have a clue

Very interesting project! The only problems i can forsee is that the tweeter opening in the door panel is only about 1 ½ inches so it might cause smearing or a horn effect at certain frequencies.

As for running them 500Hz and up the physics tells me that Dayton Driver will experience alot of cone break starting at 7.5 kHz but what sounds good to my ears and what should happen on paper isnt always the same.

Are you going to using a passive crossover if so could you post the details?

i have a simple 6bd high pass running now. i had spare capacitors and found a pair of 67µfd. that is about 550Hz or so.

yes they are a bit "shouty" right now but worlds better than the stock drivers.

i am shopping for an 8" right now and will continue to update this thread when i get them installed.

as for later there will be a 4 channel amp for just the front doors. whether i stay passive or not remains to be seen. active would make my tweaking much much easier and allow better EQing.

i will also try to get better pics, they perfectly match the panel hole as installed now. soundstage is nice and nearly at the top of the dash. i am liking that aspect.

with a 1/8" thick adapter i made there is enough room for the driver to not hit the inner door skin. again that was a test fit pic.

i applied some adhesive backed felt behind the driver then surrounded it in carpet backing foam to help with the reflections. with the door panel installed it is not bad at all.
