Too poor to list anything interesting.
It sounds like a great idea. The only issue is you would need to obtain a permit, or several permits for that matter. You would probably have to get in touch with the city you're looking to host this in and see what would be needed. It would be a bummer to have the health department roll up and shut it down.

You might be thinking about a bigger scale. If we just had a fish fry for ourself . Then invite say, one or two family's to join. No permits needed

Permits are needed and a restaurant is also needed for prep of the food. But thats when you go out and distribute the food on the street like vendors

So if we had a fish fry at, let's say Herman park. We can invite a few of the homeless people around there to join in. No permits needed for that

You could try to have one at Herman park. But if you're distributing it to the public (i.e. not friends/family), then it can become an issue if you get caught without a permit.

It looks like you'd need a temporary food permit:

Individuals or groups planning to operate a temporary food service establishment at a fixed location for a period of time of not more than 21 consecutive days in conjunction with a single event or celebration must obtain a temporary food dealer’s permit. A valid permit shall be posted in view of the public at every temporary food service establishment. Each physically separated stand or booth requires a separate permit. In any instance in which all operations within a stand or booth are not under the supervision and control of the same person, then a separate permit shall be required for each person who controls any portion of the activities within the stand or booth.

You could possibly set up a one time special event and the Star of Hope or one of the other shelters and do a fish fry their. You would not need a permit.

I also believe in supporting the shelters to help rehabilitate the homeless. I don't give homeless people money but I do tell them about the various shelters around town.

I have to be honest and say I don't like volunteering at bigger orgs. I feel they are entirely too inefficient and there is too much waste. Food, time, money, what have you. Also, one of the biggest pet peeves of mine is when some celebrity or politician comes out, hands out a couple plates, takes pictures, and are off. I've seen some politicians come in do a little song and dance and be packed up within 45 minutes. It's lame.

Not saying all orgs are like that, but I usually have more fun when it's more personal. Plus whens it's a small crowd you usually hear great stories.

I can understand how you feel. Especially with celeb/politician song and dance.

When I volunteer at Star of Hope I am in the kitchen preparing and serving food with the men in the program their. I get to here their stories and it is uplifting to see them trying to better their lives and not live on the streets.
