    It's absolutely terrifying!

This guy is trying to design a fall restraint system, and he's not a junior engineer either. He has around 30 years of experience.

So, who here thinks that a 1" diameter pipe spanning 20ft horizontally can support 5,000lbs at it's mid point?

What thickness? Doesn't matter I guess, it won't. It will bow like a mofo.

I ran the numbers for him, a 1" solid bar will still bow "like a mofo".

This guy thinks that he can design the pipe to act solely in tension, with no bending. He also thinks that the pipe will deflect when the load is applied and then spring back into place when the load is removed.

I had to get the boss involved on this one.

Common sense is something this guy doesn't have.

Edit: He's a registered Professional Engineer in over 20 states.

    That's really depressing
It's rained probably 4 days in the 7 it's been here. I refuse to look like a hoodrat with a trash bag on my window
Is the tint cost included in that?

True statement! It's supposed to move, but it's supposed to move a certain amount. There's a thing called "Total Fall Distance". It would be a shame for the pipe to bend to the point that the poor bastard attached to it hits the deck below him.

    psh, he'll bounce.

but really, i've seen idiots tied off to points 10 feet off the ground, with 6 foot yoyos on their harness. Fool, unless you're 4 feet tall, you're still gonna break your legs

    Yikes!

All I know is that I'm not qualified to design a restraint system like that. I'll leave it to the experts as I'm just a dumb structural engineer.

WTF? 1: your teacher should make sure he has the proper length fall arrestors next time. not just for safety, but becasue OSHA can slap you with one hell of a fine for that.

2: your buddy know how much it costs to get an arrestor recertified after it's been used in a fall scenario? even if it didn't work lol.

Usually have to destroy the equipment (depending on what it is). Out at Exxon if you get above 6' you have to be tied off, then funny thing is when I first got out there they provided a 6' lanyard with a 3' delecerator.. I asked at least 20 people why the fuck even tie off if I will hit the ground before the harness does anything? About a year later they switched to mandatory self retractors.

Lol sounds like H&P, anything above 4 foot you have to tie off as well. but we have the same 6 foot split lanyard and 3 foot decelerator as well....
