No it doesnt compromise the strength at all and is supposed to make the wheel stiffer (stronger) against radial forces. I had a shop in Arizona custom make the wheel for me and ultimately chose for them to do this for looks.

a good friend of mine has a local downhill race team, and they are sponsored by airborne. he is extremely happy with them, and how they are as a company. they listen to the riders, take feedback, and are a small company. he turned down a deal with specialized because he preferred this environment.

I haven't ridden their XC line but the downhill and slope bikes are great

There are some good deals on there.

Have you ever seen Pink Bike? I've bought and sold some gear on there before with good luck. www.pinkbike.com You can prolly offload your pedals and shoes there. There's thousands of people that traffic it each day.

Very much so! I had been riding a '11 Cannondale Scalpel 1 for a while but a friend of mine is huge into racing the singlespeed (crazy dude does the 24 Hours at MOAB often!) and finally talked me into trying it. I bought the cheap entry level Cannondale to start off with and have been hooked since the first ride. I quickly sold the Scalpel and built my current Niner with the funds and haven't looked back. I've been faster on my local trails with the SS then I was with my Scalpel! I was quite surprized at that.

It does take some getting used to figuring out the gearing as well as chosing my path lines more carefully due to the rigid front fork though. Where I live the gearing is simple but if I take it in the bigger mountains it can take a some swapping around to get the right median gear for the terrain. Sometimes I swap out and others I run what I brung and my body cusses at me the whole time lol

I hear ya there. I was doing the same with this for a while.

Around here we don't have much good cross country single track. It's either road or DH. We have a 27 mile loop around the North and South side of the river with a few pretty nice single track sections in it but that's about it. That's why I end up with both bikes on the truck everyday because I'll end up riding both since everything is within riding distance of each other.

Single track is about all we have around my neck of NC. I had a Scott Addict CX for a while with a road and offroad wheel set depending on what I was in the mood for but got to where I rarely road it so I got rid of it... kept sticking to the mountain bike instead.

One of these days I'd like to get a Pinarello for the road though. I've been drooling over one for quite some time now.

I had a Scott Ransom 40 All mountain for a while. It was a nice bike but the rear shock was... unique to say the least.

Yeah neither had I. It was a air shock that had a pump with a gauge on it so you could adjust the rebound and dampening. It actually rode pretty good and had a lock out on the bars so you could lock it out when standing. I didn't have it long and was more concerned about reliability. I picked it up on the cheap and didn't mind giving it a try.

There have been some pretty strange ideas in suspension land over the years...

It made a hell of a sound when it was active. A lot like a bike pump as it was moving with the suspension. It was a pretty plush ride but I just didn't trust the reliability.
