Hey i was wonderin what every one thinks about the 5 speed automatic and the 6 speed manual. I'm looking to get a new truck and i want either pyrite or mag grey and the pyrite only comes in automatic and i've heard that the 6 speed isn't the greatest. so help me out and tell me what you all think of them! thanks!

 

I have the automatic and would not recommend going with the auto. The auto in the 09 acts very strange, a lot of engine braking (by downshifting) and jumping into 1st when driving slow and not accellerating. I wish I had the 6 speed...

 

Go to the dealer and take a test drive in both.

When I bought my truck, I test drove both. I've been driving manuals since I was able to drive and when I test drove the manual....I didn't like the way the rpms stayed UP when you pushed in the clutch. It was really weird and I didn't like it. Some people say.."You'll get used to it"
That might be true, but I didn't wanna spend that much money on a truck and not like the way it shifts.

The other benefits (for me) in getting the auto was the towing package and the tranny cooler (manual doesn't have one) and the better gas mileage (so the sticker says anyway).

I'm not disappointed at all..... People complain about the Autos because of the engine braking and the 'lurch' you feel after you stop. All of that is NORMAL for an auto and based on throttle by wire & the ECU programming.

Do some research....there's a lot of complaints about the clutch on the manuals too.

It all boils down to personal preference, feel, and drive.

For me a recent knee operation ended my manual tranny days. This was the first one I have bought in my life. As long as you understand the quarks of each you will not be disappointed either way. I am starting to like the automatic.

 

i have a pyrite with a manual transmission...

 

I have had both the 6-speed in my old X-Runner and I now have the 5-speed auto in my current truck and in my option the auto is a much better tanny. The auto also get better MPG.

My 6spd has been great, fun to drive, no issues in 4.5 yrs, its geared shorter than the auto. But actually gets good mpg for my mostly rural & hilly driving.

The auto is works well, stop n go obviously much easier, and interstate speeds should get tick better mpg.

 

I have the auto and like it. I do miss the control of a manual, but I learn to live with it. The manual is geared to cruise at a higher RPM, so there is a ding in the MPG at highway speeds. Notice this on the sticker where it states the EPA MPG.

This is personal preference, manual or auto. I like the auto.

on the the toyota site it says you can only get pyrite in auto.. what year is yours

I have a 6 spd manual and not a big fan of the way it shifts, or the strength of the clutch. I have 22k on my truck and already ready to look at the auto.....

 

Tim, if you remember, it was only the TRD OR Double cab that you couldnt get the pyrite and the 6spd manual. In the Access cab you could option it the way you wanted. I've already gave you my POV on this subject so im not gonna post here. But come take mine for a few test drives and you'll see what I mean.

 

Im right there with ya. Thats about the time I started looking at the Auto. I still have my 6spd and with the addition of a URD short throw shifter kit i like it a lot better now. Smoothed shifting a bunch, but the clutch still is a little finicky.

 

I live in Socal but I like the manual. It took a while for me to get used to the shifting and the long clutch pedal travel as I was used to a car's manual but I don't think about it anymore. First gear is a little tall but it improved quite a bit when I went with larger tires (285/75R16). As others have said, there is a mpg hit with the manual. I've never towed but others have said it's better for towing up hills.

 

I had the 6 spd manual in my 07 trd and it was a pig on gas, I was gettin about 430 kms to a tank, I traded it for an auto and its a world of difference, no I get close to 600 kms before the fuel light comes on, I would never buy a standard again, the 6spd was a very jerky trans and rpm's were very high on the highway, the reason for the bad fuel mileage, go with the auto!! JMO
