I feel sort of silly asking this.

The oil change light came on for the first time at 3500ish miles in my 2014. Isn't it supposed to blink at 4500 miles and stay on solid at 5000 miles like every other Toyota? According to the manual, the first oil change doesn't come earlier than the rest... Just wondering why it came on so darn early.

It's brand new, sorry should have been more clear. 3500ish miles is the absolute odometer reading, not relative to the last oil change.

I just got back from the dealer today for my 20k service. My light did not come on at 4500 and didn't come on after 5000 mark for my service. Dealer just reset it and said it was working O.K. They feel it was reset somehow and just did another to sync it this time. My question is can they be programmed to certain mileage amount. Such as if they run Synthetic vs conventional oil?

Mine came on more around 4800ish. I had changed my oil early for the heck of it at 3000 so while odd, I didn't worry about the late blinking light.

I assume you mean Reprogrammed to go at a different mileage. Short answer would be No as the firmware is proprietary to Toyota and they are not letting that info go.

Oh and the oil change interval is the same regardless if you are running synthetic oil or not 5,000 miles.

OP is correct on 4500/5000. Mine has been exact on 4500 blink from last reset/refill for 50,000 miles.

So, sounds the portion of my ECU firmware for controlling the blinky light is a bit wonky? Figures, that's what I get for being a firmware engineer...

So, interesting update here: I'm pretty sure that the odometer itself is going haywire, not the timer light.

I went on a trip last weekend. As I left the gas station, a friend asked how many miles the truck had on it, I checked and said "less than 4,000". We drove for 300 miles, and afterwards the odometer showed over 5,000 miles. So, drove for 300 miles, odometer jumped 1000+ miles. I would almost accept that I just misread it, but a friend, myself and my wife all saw the before and after odometer readings. It definitely jumped.

Does this sound like a problem that the dealership is even remotely capable of diagnosing? I don't trust them to even change the oil. I wouldn't really care that much, but if this thing is registering miles that it hasn't driven it's causing it to decrease in value artificially. I'm not OK with that.

Some engineer probably screwed up the firmware. [IMG]
