Hey folks. This one thread is the reason I decided to register and start posting. Awesome data mine on this subject. I have some clarifying questions I hope you guys might help me with.

Here's what I want to do:

I'm trying to get an AUX input for both Apple Nano and other devices with the standard jack. I want to keep the standard look, no drilling holes, no replacing head unit, etc.

Looking at the owner's manual of my 06 crew cab TRD-Off Road I believe I have the Type 2 radio/6-disc changer with steering wheel controls.

    1) I notice you folks talk about JBL and non-JBL...I assume since I don't see the JBL logo anywhere my system is non-JBL? I guess I'm also unsure as to why it's important which I have.

    2) I was told by Best Buy that, for the Apple Nano/ipod etc, to have the songs/artists show up on the screen that I needed a device by iSimple: http://isimplesolutions.com/CES/GateWay.asp This would also allow me to use the standard controls on my steering wheel or console and would also charge the Nano. If I use this device, is it still possible to run another cord for a standard jack? I realize I would lose song/artist information if I used the standard jack with something else.

    3) I've read here that people really seem to like the Metra device. I understand the song/artist information wouldn't be on the screen and that the only control that would work from the wheel or console is volume. Okay, you pay less, get less, understood. But do you maintain the steering wheel controls while using FM radio or CD changer? I also understand I could install both interface for Apple Nano and standard jack with the Metra?

    4) This thread is pretty long-running, and since it's beginning a good source for this Metra or other equipment, Circuit City, is gone. What are other good sources for this equipment?

This thread is likely to save me a few hundred bucks. I'll post a thorough explanation and pics on my little twist of this upgrade when I'm done. Thanks for the help.

How did you remove the clock assembly from the old dash. I am installing a new dash in my truck right now and neither the clock or old stereo will come off. If I pull any harder im afraid I will break it.

    Hello Tacoma World.

This is my first post. Glad to find a forum dedicated to the Tacoma, I'm stoked about that. I need help finishing an install of a after market Clarion VRX785BT and NAX980HD (nav).

The only issue I have is I need to tap into the VSS cable to feed the speed pulse into my nav. I've called Toyota dealerships for help, but they didn't help. One of them hung up on me, it sucked.

For bonus points, how do I tap into the camera signal? My new after market deck is capable of displaying video, so I'd like to get the rear view image on the deck video screen and the rear view mirror.

Any help would be great. Thank you.

    I have a 2009 Tacoma 4x4 manual. Timberline Green.

Hello there! Ironically, I found this thread from Toyota Nation very helpful when installing my dvd/nv HU.

Thanks for the help. I accidentally ended up breaking the purple / white wire on the black connector, and hooked up the VSS cable to what appears to be the dome light cable (solid blue). I had to trick my head unit / deck by opening the door once, and it detected a "pulse".

Right now, I don't know what I'm going to do. The purple / white cable is severed and it so tight in there, I may not be able to fix it. If I take it to the dealer, they're probably going to charge me an arm and a leg to fix it, and possible void my warranty.

GPS seems to be working fine. I took it for a hour long drive, and it learned the area around my house pretty quickly. I hate that its 110% GHETTO, but for now I have a working GPS.

Is it possible that my purple / white wire never generated a pulse? When I had it hooked up to it, my head unit still didn't detect a pulse from it. Maybe there is a bigger problem with my truck.

Umm.........I noticed your controls lit up at night. Your "OFF, LO, (and the other 2 in between), HI, the word TEMP and the blue and red colors, and all the other controls on the right of it." Do our Tacomas come that way? I've been driving around for 2 years and thought they were different and did NOT light up at night. Was I wrong for the past 2 years?

All my temp controls light up with the lights on just as in the picture. Methinks your bulbs are burnt, good sir.

LOL! Dude it was like that the first day I brought it home and always forgot to call the dealer and asked as I got use to it. I hope it's under warranty so they can fix it.

Lights like that wouldn't be under warranty I wouldn't think. Warranty pretty much only covers drivetrain. The lights might be $6 a pop at worst.

Even If I drove really fast, I don't think I could get my truck mashed into your cab
Kidding aside... no, the stock deck of a 2nd gen won't fit in a 1st gen due to the faceplate. Besides, you'll be much better off with an aftermarket deck anyway.

PA15-TOY installation link, Put the PA15-TOY in. Works great, no problems. I used this link http://www.acceleroto.com/pa15toy/ which made it a snap, I have the same radio. Some of the posts show different radios then mine.I just put all the wire and box in the glove compartment instead of trying to jam it all behind the radio.

The wiring colors on the stereo/adapter side of things are going to be different per manufacturer. Therefore a picture of my wiring won't be very helpful to you (since I used Pioneer and Metra wiring).

When you get the stuff from Best Buy, get the wiring adapter from them it will be for the 2005+ Tacoma. They will know which one at the store. The wiring adapter will come with a wiring diagram, and the stereo instructions will come with a wiring diagram. Using these two diagrams to hook up to each other, you will see that the wiring is VERY easy. ;)

That deck will fit in the Tacoma dash (provided you get the correct dash kit) with no problem.

I want to add an xm tuner and ipod to play through the factory radio. I read where some tuners have a pass through plug so the ipod can be charged and/or run through this same cabling to the oem radio. The electronic store salesman said the magnetic antenna was not necessary since the FM antenna was already capable of picking up the XM signal once I had a subscription. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on which way I should go? I found lots of xm tuners without the interface designed to go in cars that were xm capable.

Just installed an Alpine 6886 with the ********* dash kit to go with my Pioneer TSA's already installed...

In retrospect, I kind of wish the fit and finish of the TT/Metra Electronics dash surround was a little better, but it'll do. :)

I recently installed a new clarion HU that has dvd capability and i think i did the wiring a bit wrong. it will only play dvd's when the parking brake is activated, which i gather is illegal in the u.s. anyhow, i have read a few remarks here that say to splice the parking brake wire to the ground wire, and have read several other places that say a toggle switch of some kind is needed. any advice as to which is right and which will work? any help is greatly appreciated.

You installed it correctly. It's illegal to play DVDs when the parking brake is OFF - this allows you to watch DVDs while driving, which can cause traffic accidents.

Anyone here do a stereo upgrade on a 2009/10 Taco? I had a question about the wiring of the OEM aux-input connection, the one down by the 12VDC outlet. :D
