In the process of acquiring an 8" LSD rear diff with 4.10's for a crazy low price. I'm happy

Solid running cars, but electrical gremlins up the wazoo. When I worked as a service writer, I don't think I ever saw a single VW that didn't have at least one electrical fault.
For instance, an alternator that's designed to ground out on the block. A solid design plan, until you make the alternator housing out of aluminum and don't apply a corrosion inhibitor. Works great when it's new, but as soon as there's enough galvanic corrosion between the cast iron block and the aluminum housing to break the circuit your battery goes dead.
Most shops will diagnose it as a bad alternator, but you can usually fix it by either running a ground wire from the negative battery terminal and anchoring it on the alternator (We used to test them using a jumper cable from the neg. terminal and clamping it to the alternator), or by cleaning up the contact points between the housing and the block.

Shrug. I'll never own a VW if I can help it, but that's because electrical problems drive me batshit.

Yeah id say thats a good deal. In my 97 at around 135K miles my fuel pump started to go. But that was really my only issue. Just normal wear and tear stuff.

John I used to be a tech for them. I left that business 20 years ago but they were a good solid car. The one thing from back then was the vin number was the thing to watch. 3VW was made in mexico and they sucked. WVW was in germany and the 1VW was made in America either of those you were good. The tdi is a very good motor as far as I have been hearing.

I suppose it is the next logical step after buying a station wagon. So Alex, when are you getting a Jetta or Fiat?

Keep them away from puddles, and drive like the oil pan is made of glass.

I'm just teasing you, I spend almost as much and have considered doing something similar.
