    i wouldn't go that far, but in the last few years they have become more of a fad than a bike manufacturer.
    they sell more merch than anything now.

    most people that love them will say that most of them leak oil, which on a motorcycle means oil on u and like u said u have to pay as much as the bike cost to have it the way u want it and the are pretty damn expensive

    they used to leak oil, but that has been fixed...at least since 2003. they are expensive, but they are just a different machine than other manufacturers (trust me, i come from a family of bikes and currently dad has a HD and I have a yamaha). however, in the past couple of years, marketing and image has gotten the best of HD. they started making bigger engines and now have heating (or cooling, i should say) problems. in fact, alot of historic HD fans are starting to hate what they've become. the biking craze for the past 2 years artificially propped up sales and now HD is hurting badly as they starting producing for projected demand that never materialized. and the worst selling bikes are the ones the 1st time bike owners and "weekend warriors" wanted.

    understandle. i felt the same for a while, but after riding my friend's harleys, they are just so nice. expensive, but nice. really, the only complaint i have, is the price.
