any standards for the up comming season?

This was brought up on a hunting forum I frequent, and I thought it would be intresting to see.

What will be your standards for deer this year? Big body,big rack? If its brown its down?

Me personally will be my first year for bow hunting, so i'd be happy just to see a deer, and maybe during one of the seasons, take a racked buck since my last few deer have been does, and one button buck(thought it was a big doe)

 

this will be my first year hunting ever...ill take what i can get. i dont even understand all the rules in NYS...can i even shoot a doe? hunters safety course was a fucking joke.

 

do yourself a favor before you just go blasting anything in the woods..pick up a nys fish and game book(available where you get your license, or hunting/fishing stuff) and read it front to back.

 

i got one at the class...thats the one good thing i got out of it. ill be sure to read it front to back soon.

 

i got mine a couple of days ago for NJ, and ive been reading it every time I go in for a poop..good quality time to study and learn what you need to know, besides your not going anywhere for a while right? Your just comming in where you can understand it..NJ had the same rules for the longest time, and now there throwing crossbow use,hunting on sundays only in certain areas..yadda yadda yadda...into the mix..very confusing.

 

yeah they dont make all these rules too easy to understand

 

In Oregon, you cannot shoot a doe. Hunting on the East Side of the state is from a draw.

I did not draw a deer tag last year, so no venison for James. I did draw a hare tag for Elk, (either sex) and bagged a 4x3 Bull.

So this year, deer with horns = dead.

I always prefer the big racks personally, they have always been my standard.

if im able to get in the woods this year...as all other times.......im good with does,as long as its a doe day...and most weekends are. now...i will take a nice buck, but if i see a doe.......i drop her. better meat....and no matter how long you boil them damn antlers......you cant eat the sumbitches!

 

I have 4 doe tags, plan to get use of them too. This is year three for bowhunting, and I am still at zero with a bow....maybe it's a sign

 

im hoping to get out and scout this week, i need to get them sumbitches seasoned uP!

 

Well I don't consider myself a "headhunter", but the last three bucks I took were management type. With the amount of property these needed to be weeded out.
Plans for this year hopefully more does, at least 6 and a heavy mass buck, down in the area I hunt we call them "high boys". But then again a trophy, well every buck a person shoots is a trophy, some people don't see anything. I am blessed with whatever I take.

 

For me I try to only shoot mature animals. Does and bucks. The group that I hunt with has been doing this now for going on ten years and the ones that hunt in nearby areas have all been doing this for at least five years. While we might take a few less bucks overall those that we do shoot are defiantly much better bucks.

Ten years ago getting a shot at a ten of any size would have been a rarity. I had three come in opening day of rifle season. All were three and a half year old deer though and all got a free pass. Shot a doe that day in the afternoon. Bagged a 5 and a half year old nine two days later. Not the biggest buck in the world (darn nice though if you ask me) but he was fully mature and wasn't going to get any bigger.

Also managed to take a pretty respectable eight with the bow, as well as another doe that was nearly as large in the body as that eight point! Biggest darn doe that I have ever seen.

Bow season opens up pretty soon. I am stoked!

 

I'm looking for either a mature buck, or I'll take a couple of does. Plenty of them on the property I'm hunting.

I will pretty much take a buck or a doe first, just to put some meat in the freezer. After that I will hold out for a nice buck or a hog.
