Rear Wheel Seal went out AGAIN!??

I just had it in about 5k miles ago for the left rear wheel seal that went out. They took care of me, by all means, but now I walk outside and the inside of my wheel is soaked! So bad its spraying up inside my fenders. What the heck? Is this a bad job installing the seal or could something be wrong with the axle? I have to take it in tommorow... bummer

 

Just a PITA I tell ya. Not even sure if they're gonna have a rental car waiting, says they're all checked out atm.

 

Make sure your rear axle breather is not clogged first off. If it is not clogged, there is a good chance it was not installed properly the last go around. Although any way you look at it, Toyota's rear axle seals have been known to fail more so then most.

 

Good point, I was thinking about that as well, just never checked it. Really don't care, its an inconvenience, but at least they'll take care of it.

 

Do you have any pics of where it is leaking from or how can you tell if it may be a seal?

 

My rear axle has a vacuum in it, maybe could be related to seal failure? My new-to-me '06 4cyl 2wd when checking the pumpkin oil has had a vacuum when removing the fill plug... is this normal? Will it wear the oil seals from this outside pressure/inner vacuum? The breather nipple thing is slightly wobbly loose but not coming off.

 

The breather is 1 way, another benefit of the mod to extend and open that shitty little thing up so it breathes. Diff gets hot and sucks the seals in?

 

The only way a vacuum is achieved in the rear axle is when the diff is heated, and then cooled rapidly while the system is sealed (note it is not supposed to be sealed). So in the event you are experiencing a vacuum, the first place you look is at your differential breather. One way to find out if it is good is to suck on the breather. This can be pretty shitty depending on how dirty the diff is, but is a quick and easy way to tell if the breather is doing its job.

 

I'll take fresh pictures later, don't have time right now. Theres a couple from last time in my gallery though. Basically the whole inside of my wheel is soaked, and since it spins going down the highway, the inside of my fender has a nice spray line from the inside of the wheel.

 

I have checked the gear oil twice, once as an initial level check after acquisition and a second time to make sure the oil I added was enough after driving it and the oil distributing to both sides of the axle. Both times I checked, everything was cold and the filler plug/hole started sucking air in even before the plug was fully unscrewed, you could clearly hear it sucking. Seemed like a bit of air and much more of a vacuum than I would have imagined. The breather nipple thing is wobbly but not coming off, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's breathing both ways as designed. Will check, thanks everyone. I'd rather not have any unnecessary pressure/vacuum on the wheel bearing seals.
