Yellow Stickers FYI (factoid) ... because you should know.

I've been following all the threads about the yellow stickers and wondering why no one with earlier model trucks (me with a 2005) has recieved any sort of sticker since they're pretty much the exact same truck.

So I was reading on of the car/truck magazines (online) and noted that these yellow stickers have been federally mandated and will also start appearing on Tundra's as well (if they haven't already). Aparently when a vehicle is manufactured with factory options (not dealer after delivery addons) then the manufacture is now required to put the yellow sticker on to account for the weight of the factory options and reduced payload capacity. That basically means that if you say have running board or nerf bars installed prior to the truck being delivered to the dealer then they subtract the weight and you get a yellow sticky. Same would be truck if say you were in a state where A/C was not standard but was optional. They would install the A/C at the factory and bamm you would get a sticker.

Now on a side note to that.. there is a group of automanufacture (Toyota is a member) which are looking to create SAE standards for tow capacities and payload capacities instead of those numbers simply being marketing hype (See the stories about the Dodge RAM). If successfull the new standards will go into play for the 2011-2012 model year trucks/SUVs. This could affect the numbers just as the new SAE standards for measuring torque and HP did a few years back with the same V6 Tacoma engine that has been in the trucks since 2005. According to the different standards the 2005 models have a more powerfull engine .. NOT. Will be interesting to see what happens.

That federal mandate stuff doesn't make any sense.

I don't understand how that yellow sticker (aka 4lbs/5lbs????) has anything do with extra stuff you put on your truck. My gawd, your lunch pail could weigh 5lbs.

That's what GVWR and GCVWR is for.

Got any links that explain all this? Cuz, it doesn't make sense to me.

 

so if my stciker says the capacity has been reduced 290 lbs, then i have 290 lbs worth of added accessories? that's a pretty diesel backup camera

The problem(s) I have with all of this is that the sticker was never pointed out to me during or after the sale. It wasn't until I was reading on this site a while back that, I was like WTF. Went out and looked, and sure enough a 50lb. sticker.

So to me I what I bought was not what they advertised.

The second thing is the inconsistencies in what the stickers on our trucks say, anywhere from 5 - 290lbs??

It will all be useful though when I go in for the TSB.

The SAE Standards sound like a really good idea - what took them so long?

But that whole 5lb sticker crap - is totally stupid.

 

Actually it is if you read the fine print. I think Ford does the best and explaining tow ratings on their web site while other manufactures seem to "hide" the small print.

Tow ratings and payload ratings are based on an empty truck with no items considered as options. It includes full fluids including a full tank of gas. It also includes compensation for 1 person (the driver) whom they say only weighs 150#. Sooo.. taking all that in you start subtracting from payload and tow ratings once any of those numbers goes up. So if you weigh 200# and you put 3 more 200# people in your truck that's less 650# left for overall payload. Add bull bars, nerf bars, winch, 50# worth of upgraded audio equipment and that all has to come off as well. So as said.. technically it is advertised just not in a way we all understand.

My problem is that I had the 290# and the only options were SR5 and 7 speaker sound. There is no way that those weight 290#.

 

I am very fortunate. I bought my truck to go back and forth to work, Home Depot and some off roading as the opportunity allows. It works great for picking up my son and his wife at the airport, plenty of room inside the cab for four adults and plenty of room for luggage in the back. The ride is very pleasant even off road with four adults. This truck is just plain fun to drive. If I hauled around motorcycles or towed a trailer while loaded down with gear I would probably be pretty pissed off about the three leaf pack and that stupid yellow sticker. As of this moment I personally see no need for the TSB and don't plan on getting it.

 

That's what I'm not understanding. I've got a base model MT 4 cyl reg cab, there's nothing added on there that would account for nearly 300 lbs.

 

While agreed it seems ridiculous, the point of the sticker is to protect Toyota for that one guy that gets the mall lawyer that goes, "He was 150lbs under the GRVW when he lost control, thus the truck was unable to respond to the manufacture's claimed limits." Just protecting themselves, if you bought the truck to haul exactly the rated amount... you're an idiot anyway for running max load all the time.

 

because in the US you guys have such ridiculous lawsuits, toyota has to protect themselves.

so if they put a towing package, they will reduce the #, etc.

A lot about a little as far as i am concerned.

I always assume the claims (by all manufacturers) are exaggerated due to past experience combined with a firm grasp of the obvious.

How many buyers actually meet manufacturers MPG claims for a given vehicle on a regular basis?

Bottom line - It is what is is. Dont' overload the truck. If you need to carry more, get a bigger truck. Perhaps a FULL size truck.

 

If you go and buy a burger at a fast food joint, you expect to get a full burger, not one with a bite taken out. Same for my truck. I want to be able to load what it said when I bought it, not when they added a sticker to reduce it.

 

Wow...when I called my dealership's service department to ask about the "the sticker" a couple of days after I bought the truck they tried to tell the same thing....that it had to do with certain factory options my truck has. Honestly, I just chuckled to myself and said "ok".

Looks like they may be right.

 

If you buy a burger at a fast food joint and it has a bite out of it, you might want to switch fast food joints.

If your really hungry, buy a bigger burger.

 

So, I wonder what my status is since I dont have the original "load reduction yellow sticker adendum" to begin with.
Since the Instructions clearly state to apply the 4 or 5 pounder sticker OVER the yellow addendum sticker applyed at the Processing Center, I am unable to comply.

Just lucky , I guess.

I just got one that said 5 lbs. Do I add that onto my already 260 reduction making it 265 or is it now just 5 lbs????
