Faint is good, especially when the same conditions usually resulted in a cacophony of noise.

Has anyone been denied? I changed my plugs a few weeks ago, and now it is hard to hear the pinging. And it doesn't always do it.
The reason I ask, is because the service writer said that if they don't hear it they won't reprogram the ECU.

I was told that as well. They couldn't here it, but did it anyway since they said they're seeing quite a few trucks with the noise

Update...kinda. have gone about 65ish miles since TSB was performed. Still makes some ruckus, but not as loud or often. Seems to go away quicker as well. Haven't filled the tank again, but judging by my fuel gauge, my fuel mileage HAS gone down. I'll probably fill up in a couple of days, and cipher up the mileage. I'm guessing 13-14. Hopefully I'm wrong...for the better

It would probably be a good idea to track mileage for a few fuel-ups after the TSB is performed, then get an average mpg. Even so, hope a drop in mpg isn't the case.

As soon as I noticed the pinging noise & found a temporary fix on TW (running higher octane), I began running premium fuel only in the truck. I'm not sure exactly how many miles I've ran premium, but it's been quite awhile.

I just filled up today with 87 regular. The clacking/pinging is much worse today than what I remember it being before I switched to 91 premium.

Now that the sound will easily be heard, it's time for a trip to the dealer.

    Stay tuned.

I've been busy do to vacation coming up soon, but was able to stop by the dealership to see if they had time to take care of this. They didn't and had no idea that the tsb even existed...

Well the TSB software update is a bust for me, mine is back with a vengeance. I have been roughly 1055 miles and my engine is now pinging almost exactly like it did before. Doesn't matter what octane I use either, whereas before I could almost make it go away with 91, and its now pinging at cooler temperatures from about 63% and upwards. I am suppose to drop it off at the dealer tomorrow morning and they are going to call Toyota for further instructions. Maybe a different type of plug or something of that nature, they are not too sure right now.

Shoot. So you're saying that ~1,000 miles after the TSB, while running 87 regular fuel, you noticed pinging again; at that time you tried switching to 91, and now you can't stop the pinging with 91?

I noticed what I would describe as a chattering type noise about 780 miles after having the TSB done. It turned out to be the pinging was back. So now I have been running 91 octane for about 250 and seems to be worse than before, it just doesn't go away at all now. My tech at the dealer has changed my appointment to Thursday now, says he wants to contact Toyota first to see what direction they should go. He strongly feels a reflash to remove the TSB and a better quality plug would cure the problem but I guess time will tell. I am about to leave for vacation for a few weeks towing my camper about 3800 miles.

Glad I haven't jumped at having mine done yet, keep us posted on what you find out. Its a bummer the TSB didn't work out for you, looks like I will just keep running 93.

Had mine done last week, pinging quit immediately and has not returned. It's really hot here right now btw. Hand calculated the last tank of 87 no change (about 19 in mixed driving). I do home health and put a lot of miles on the taco so I'll keep an eye on it and provide regular updates. Sorry to hear its not working out for some...

Had mine done last week too. Pinging stopped but it's also been cool here... I'll report back in a few weeks.

I had the TSB done today, was pinging as I pulled into the service lane. Temps dropped while I was waiting do to a storm rolling through. When I left it was 77 and no pinging, just drove over to my parents place which has some moderate grades and could not get it to ping down to just over 1k rpm. Tomorrow forecast is for hotter then today, so the real test will come tomorrow mid day.

Hey Randy, can you let us know what your service department & toyota want to do with your truck at this point? Thanks.

Good. Well shoot me too. It will be interesting to see how many people experience a return of the pinging after ~1000 miles.

Yes please let us know what happens.

Glad to hear they performed the TSB. It seems like some have had pinging return after ~1000 miles. Please keep us updated on your truck. Thanks!

Eh now lol it's been floating around 30c/90f for the past month here haha
My taco just went into the dealership today and has been experiencing this issue I mentioned the TSB as well as brought in the papers and they had no idea about it and basically denied me :( wanted to charge me $60 for a cabin air filter and I had to fight with them to rotate my tires because there aftermarket...as well as charge me for synthetic oil change when ECP platinum warranty covers 8 free oil changes...at least they're doing the brake actuator recall which I believe fixes the random VSC light coming on hopefully...

Sounds like your dealership is awful! What the hell does it matter who's tires they are if they're bolted to your truck? Weird. I'm debating on taking mine in for this. The mixed reviews make me nervous. I still have time so I guess it's no biggie just yet.
