there is no doubt the motor has to come out...and then decide after teardown if it rebuildable or replace with an unknown quality junkyard motor.

Normally, I drop the block stripped of all the accessories at the local machine shop and let them do the work.

That is an awesome deal! I definitely would have considered this route if I had known this was available, everywhere I looked said they didn't reman the 2001 3rz. And that warranty is almost better than Toyota's current warranty!

You're right this isn't my DD and I have to wait on the original owner to file for a lost title anyways, he recently moved, so I have all kinds of time. I wish I could have looked at it more today but it has been raining all day and it's hard to pull a truck in the garage when it doesn't run :(

The Prerunner should have the same oil pan as the 4x4 since you can covert it fairly easily. It dips real low in the front and is very shallow in the back so that could be the case as why it is cleaner.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE TITLE DON'T SPEND ANY MONEY!

I've lost track of the number of people that were promised title and never received it and were out some serious cash because of it. I know of one guy that was in the same boat, dropped a lot of coin on a full restore, and then had to go to court when the PO decided to reclaim the car. 99% of the time it's a 'good friend' that does that crap. So play, but don't spend a dime until its in your name.

I 100% agree, I won't spend any money until I get the title. That's why I am more than willing to tear it apart to look at it. The only thing I'm gonna buy is some degreaser, it is covered in oil from the bottom of the valve cover to the oil pan. I am just tired of being covered in grease each time I just want to look at it.

Some people have to work with what they got. Not everyone can get a new truck after being a dumbass and totaling their other truck like some people.

Edit: Just like your sig says, go full retard. You accomplished that task.

First off, if you can't move the crankshaft then one of two things USUALLY are the culprit. 1) the crankshaft has seized either a connecting rod, or a main bearing. or 2) a piston ring is seized or rusted into place over sitting for too long.

In order to determine if the crankshaft is seized you can loosen the rod cap nuts, and the main bearing bolts some, then try again to turn the engine over from the front (It would also help to have all the drive belts loose if not already. If the engine turns over, then you know it was the crank seized. Minimum repair would be new rod and main bearings, and having the crankshaft turned (Machined) If it STILL will not turn, then most likely you will have a ring seized. If THAT is the case, the entire engine will need to be disassembled, and the cylinders honed at the least. This can add up and get expensive FAST. Now I have bought several long block from JIS engines in Arlington, TX and they have a full long block, totally machined with no miles on it, for $2k. Now yes, $2k seems expensive, but when you start talking getting your old engine machined, and rebuilding it, the parts, machine work, and labor time alone (Even if you do the teardown and reassembly yourself) can EASILY top that mark. And with a JIS engine, you have an engine that has already been totally rebuilt with new pistons, rings, bearings, crankshaft, oil pump, water pump, timing belt, etc.
    Just a thought for you.....

When i purchased my 04 taco 4x4 for $500 with a blown motor i had to wait almost 2 weeks for the seller to receive a duplicate lien release. It was torture having the truck sitting at my work and not wrenching on it. I'm not gonna wrench on a vehicle until i have a signed clear title/lien release. Like i already mentioned, and others here mentioned, find a good used complete motor from a wrecked tacoma after you have the title in hand. I found my 3.4L from a salvage yard on ebay. It came out of a totaled 03 prerunner with 69k miles. The yard gave me the vin# and emailed me many pics of the engine and the donor truck. Still it was scary buying/shipping a used engine from Arizona to me in Maryland but it is performing great. As long as you have the time, tools and of course tacomaworld it will be a fun & rewarding project!

Thats what I'm sayin'.. a friend of mine used to work/manage a salvage yard & he was the best source of just commonsense ideas , he was the one who said the obvious "Look for the severly totaled vehicles I said "why"? looks me dead in the eye with the obvious answer "Because it was running up until the wreck" DUUHHH He had a car battery/jumper cables & compression gauge all mounted on a handtruck, find a potential engine to check, yank the plugs get a quick feel for condition & 9 out of 10 times rolled out of the yard with engines that were mech very sound with alot of life in them still...

POS or not it cost my $220 to pay for the gas, starter, and trailer to get it to my house. The fiberglass bed cover alone, which I don't really care for, would probably pay for that expense.

I think if I put just a little bit of money into this truck, I will have good truck to last me for years. Plus I was getting bored and wanted a project anyways. :)

LOL you removed the pic of your truck all F'd up. :D

You got the right attitude OP! You'll find a good deal on a motor, swap that puppy in and have a great truck for next to nothing. I think you should start a build thread on it the day you get the title. I want to see where this goes.

That is similar to the process I used when I used to buy from impound auctions. The cars that were cleaned out with nothing in the glove box? Leave them! Abandoned for a reason. The cars will lots of beer cans it in? Buy them! Most likely impounded from DUI, most likely to have good engines and transmissions.
