I have a Buck 110 but haven't used it. I also have a BHK/CC Woodcrafter but haven't used it.

I have a hard time using pretty knives. My favorite users are a Fällkniven F1 and my favorite $12 knife, a Mora Robust. I have a Leatherman Wave also, but don't use for hiking.

When we get kayaks that's likely my plan of attack. Had them on my last car and they worked great. Did you use the J hooks to carry them or just stack and strap?

Only ground Insulation is a thermarest and sleeping bags used on that trip are the Western Mountaineering Puma bags, good for -20

Nice bag. WMs are sweet! I wish I could swallow the price tag of their 7 ft long 15 degree bags.

I stack and strap. I went with the 66" crossbars (which stick out a decent bit, and have knocked a few heads) to be able to lay 2 kayaks side by side.

I've tried a lot of different configs, but I usually end up strapping the 14 footer and 1 12 footer independently, then I stack the other 12 footer on the first 12 footer and strap again. Works well when they're all Sit On Tops.

When I carry my Tsunami 125 (Sit In), I can't stack it because of the rounded hull. I throw it on top of 2 foam blocks that I cut to fit over the point where the crossbars hit the Q towers.

Never was interested in the J Hooks. They seem like you can't ratchet down on the boat too much without compromising them.

Backpacking is an all year event no matter what the weather conditions maybe.

One day I'll be a winter backpacker. My pad and bag purchases will allow it, my tent and lack of winter clothing do not. I don't get snow here but low temps and wind is my winter. Are you using a stove for winter or utilizing fire? I don't have a need for a liquid fuel stove, but inverted iso stoves are a good medium for me. My low temps don't really knock iso out of contention

They do carry a hefty price but when your 10/15 miles out in the middle of nowhere for a week at a time and the storms about to hit every penny spent issuers you make it back out plus you should feel as comfortable as sitting on the couch watching a warm fire.

Thinking about buying a hammock...multiple uses

Want to possibly have it on my porch, able to quickly pack it up and throw it in the truck or kayak and easily set it up in the woods

    suggestions?

No doubt there they're worth more than their price tag. That just exceeds my experience level at this point. I am looking at a Montbell UL #1, if it fits.

Hennessey makes a great hammock, so does Eno. Check out hammockforums.com

Its the TW of all things hammock. You will never get to the bottom if the information bucket.

    So many choices....

    I've got 1 by Yukon Outiftters: http://www.amazon.com/Yukon-Outdoors-MG10502-Parachute-Hammock/dp/B00I2XLEL6

I also made my own gathered end hammock with some ripstop nylon ($20 worth of fabric). It works just as good as the one above, though I didn't make a stuff sack.

ENO and Hennessy make great hammocks as well.

Hammockforums.com is littered with info. Lots of DIY examples there.

No shame, jetboils are solid pieces. I'd do the same thing.

Eno or Hennessey. REI has Eno on sale for their Labor Day sale Aug 18-Sept 1. That's what I'd grab. A Doublenest!

Makes sense to grab a double...even if I don't regularly use it with someone else right?
