ive had a shell on my last 2 tacos for maybe 7 years now and love it.i would never not own a pick up with out one. i disagree with ktmrider about buying a suburban instead of a pick up. would you put some smelly mudding item in the back of your suburban?i wouldnt. i am in the construction field and keep all my tools and supplies in the back and dont have to hear them clanking around or worry about them getting wet or stolen.you can plie crap up to the ceiling without haaving to tie them down.i like the look of a cap but most people do not but i say fuck them.

I went with a soft top because:

-less than half the price of a hard shell

    -light weight, ~22lbs

-takes less than 5 minutes to remove or install, and you can do it by yourself

-can be folded down to haul a tall load or can be removed and folded up to store in garage

those all really great points for the softop. i thought about that for a second.my only complaint is its like a jeep wrangler soft top. it wouldnt take much more than a pocket knife to break it. if you dont keep anything of value in the back than a softtop is the way to go

I say go for it. Don't listen to other people advice. If you want them, get it or don't worry about getting one. Little off topic, I am getting Leer Tonneau 700 with matching color soon. I order them about two weeks ago. :)

get a soft topper, like Bestop if security is not an issue. You can fold it up,or just pop on and off easy. And you can take it off all by yourself without any xtra help.If you do go this route got streetsideauto.com. they will give you the best deal around.good luck.

Love mine use it constantly. Security is an issue almost anywere anymore so if you plan to leave items in the bed get a hard top not a soft top. I like mine for transporting the dogs and keeping things out of the elements.

i'm getting the bestop supertop. i like how you can quickly fold it up or take it off if you need to fit high loads but you can also store/protect a bunch of stuff in there or sleep in it! it doesnt lock though so it wouldnt take much for someone with a blade to cut through and get your stuff... or just unzip it ha

not to thread jack but has anyone used a product like this? http://www.truckalterations.com/html/trailseal.html

anybody had issues with stuff leaking into the bed at all?

I had one on my S-10 and I miss it. It was great for road trips, etc.
In fact, I am starting to want one for my Taco now!

One thing I would do this time around, is to seal the gate and anywhere else needed.
When I drove on dirt roads everything in the shell would get covered with a layer of fine dust.

For anyone in California, if you report to the DMV that you have a permanent shell on the back, you can save about $80/year on your next and subsequent registration renewal.

Pickup trucks in California are considered commercial vehicles even if they're privately registered. As a result you pay weight fees on the truck; the heavier the truck, the more the fee. Our truck falls into the $80 category.

The only caveat is you have to leave the shell on, so if you want the freedom to take it off when you desired, you should continue to pay the weight fees.

You can tell a commercial truck plate because it only has one letter in it, as opposed to a car or SUV which has 3 letters. So if you see a truck with a shell with only one number in its plate, let the owner know he/she can save some bucks.

It doesn't apply to Tonneau or soft covers.
