I don't have a lift on my 13' yet, but plan on adding a 3" lift and a winch down the road. When I do it, it won't be for looks or for necessarily "needing" the extra clearance off road.

For me it will be more of a "just in case I need it" off-road kind of thing, and same for the winch too. I don't trail ride or rock crawl off-road for sport, but I do hunt and fish a lot and that gets me in some pretty crazy places off-road sometimes. Can I get by without the extra lift or winch? Yes Would both of those be nice to have just in case you need it and for piece of mind? Definitely

Same reason I picked the off-road for the e-locker. Do I really need a locker having 4WD? Probably Not Does it give me piece of mind knowing it's there just in case? Definitely

I agree with the look of the SR5 and base models, but I think the TRD models have a great stance from the factory.

99% of the time the opposite is true.

Mods are worth little to nothing when a truck is being sold and traded in. Sometimes they'll detract from the value of your car. If the dealership actually asks you every time they see you about your truck, it's more likely that they want to put you in a new car, buy your truck for cheap as possible and resell it at a profit, and keep their lights turned on.

Mines for looks, OEM's up front and ten year old Deaver 8's out back. Used to have 5100's till one broke with 60K urban miles. Now I've got icon remote reservoir shocks for those pot holes, lol.

My truck goes off road a decent bit, but the small lift in the front isn't necessary for it.

What part? Search any car.com, auto trader, ebaymotors you will see a price increase for lifted trucks, they are popular and desired. The dealer here lifts them new and sells them, why? Because there is a demand. I am 99% certain I could sell my truck for more than the value of an equivalent stock truck. Hence the options when you do the kbb.com price it there is a checkbox for oversized tires and lift. Yes mods traditionally decrease value, but if you keep your truck stock minus a lift and some nice big tires I guarantee you will get more than not lifted.

Nice response. I agree whole heartedly mods usually decrease value. But there is no denying the fact that lifted trucks add to resell value. But whatever you want to think. Sometimes love the conversations/thought processes of people on this forum.

    Ok..

Dealers lift new trucks because they can mark up the cost of the lift and finance it to someone with interest. Dealers don't like used lifted vehicles because they're modified and sometimes questionably, and may or may not have been abused in terrain/conditions that may have subtracted life from the vehicle and it's parts. Potential buyers see the same thing, the ONLY market for modified vehicles is people who are looking for them, specifically. Aftermarket parts have retail value and they have resale value, they don't retain that value when they're left on a vehicle. I can't buy a $40k truck and spend $20k in parts and sell it for $60k, it's still a $40k truck regardless of what I've spent on it.

Lifted trucks might "add resale value" on internet websites, but VALUE and SELLING PRICE are different numbers. Let me know when you price your truck online, and then allow the dealer to finally have the opportunity to buy your rig from you and see what number you get from them.

My nice response was disagreeing with you over something I don't give a shit about, but since you can't read between the lines, there's what my head says. I hope you get as much money as you want for your truck, but your logic defies reality 9 times out of 10. If you want to keep your head in the clouds, be my guest. You can have a $3k shell on your bed and the dealer won't give you $500 for it on trade in or purchase, because they're buying the TRUCK, not it's parts. Parts have value, the truck is never valued more than the truck is valued. They'll give you $500 bucks and throw it on Craigslist for $1k and double their money.

    :jerkoff: Okay man.

    False.

Most people wouldn't buy a lifted or modified truck.

In fact, to most people, it's a red flag.

True, dealers are selling a ton of brand new lifted trucks these days, but only because they're popular, and people know they haven't been beaten.

This is true. I won't buy modified cars/trucks at all. Who knows what was done to them, if the install was done correctly, and odds are if it was lifted someone romped the hell out of it.

Stock is the way to go.

I'd never buy a lifted rig. There's a BIG reason people sell their modded parts and/or trade/replace their stock equipment before trade in. Stock vehicles are worth more, even in appearance. You can beat the shit out of your truck and put it to stock and the dealer may not even notice when they write your check. Doing so in the same condition with mud tires and a lift kit, they'll use their finest toothed comb to cover their ass and protect their financial liability in buying a used car with mods and aftermarket equipment. Neither of those show a vehicle that has had an easy life on the highway when it's not parked in the garage.

    Sell privately. :)

One guy on the "show your shells" thread works at a dealer, and the manager doesn't like truck shells. So he got a nice Snugtop or Leer for the price of FREE. Wonder how much the dealer paid the customer for it on trade in to give it away.

Back to OP, I'm going to level my Taco but not doing it until I replace the tires. I do 19k+ miles a year and don't offroad, just dirt roads when I use them to go somewhere else. I like the level look, but I'm perfectly happy in stock form with my little 245s. 3rd gen Tacoma's are sex.

I agree with this. The difference is pretty noticeable between the 2 models (SR5 and TRD-OffRoad anyway)

This is pretty interesting to me, I have an SR5 4x2 and don't notice a huge difference in my stance/appearance from TRD OR outside of TRD OR. I don't really see many I guess, probably 75% I see are Sports.

    what am i missing?
