Hauling Long Lumber

    I have a double cab, long bed that I need to use to haul 1 - 2"x12"x24'. I don't have a trailer. Any ideas?

    Here's one, drive over the piece, tie it up the trailer hitch and then to whatever I can find up front. This way, I should have about 3' overhanging the front and 3' out the back. Thoughts?

    Not so sure how safe it would be to haul it under or over your Tacoma.....depending on how far you have to go it might be worth finding a trailer to borrow for an hour or so...how far do you have to go with it?

    I'm worried about doing that because it can only be supported for about 6'. That leaves about 15' overhanging the front.


    Not far, and in the city. My only worry is the high hill that I have to go over for the railroad tracks.

    Well, you could do what I did and use a wheel barrow until your back muscles get a little stronger.

    OR

    You could try adding a third axle to the rear of your truck and extend the bed a bit more. Just make sure you update your sig pic. ;)

    OR

    Put some padding down on the roof of your truck and buy a Thule Goal Post to support the rear.

    The places I called initially, would deliver it (if they sold it) but the places that sell it, only deliver if it is a $500 order. I may go to Lowe's and see if their trucks have a lumber rack.

    I need to reinforce the floor under my china cabinet and I think that I need a 2x12x24 piece to fit in there. I need to take the exact dimensions first.

    That sucks man you only need one 2x12. Your best bet is to brib someone who has a ladder rack.

    Hey man, I haven't done this yet in my brand new truck, but a while ago with my previous truck ('91 4x4 Toy with xtra cab); I was building a covered porch and needed 16 2x12x24 length boards. I needed to make 3 trips, but basically I put the tail gate up, placed a thick blanket on the top of the truck near the back. I then placed 6 boards at a time (2 stacks of three) with only about 2-3 feet sticking off the back and the rest pointing out of the front. They were slightly longer then the truck so didn't go beyond the front. I then tied them down real good and drove about 30-40 mph home. Worked like a champ!

    :eek: Don't try that with your new truck. I think they started making the roof out of aluminum foil. Quite a few people here have leaned on their roof and put a dent in it. I'd contemplate getting a trailer hitch like mjp suggests and a roof rack, but then it starts getting pricey. I'll post back with pictures when I decide what to do.

    Don't do it. I just got some 2x8x20s and there is no way I would move them with this truck. Of course I have a bed extender bar (one that goes into the hitch) and even with that it left about 10 feet or more hanging there in the breeze. I got it delivered!
    I have moved several 6x6x12s with no problem using the extender. Oh and our trucks will take 4 (5 might be unsafe) big railroad ties.
