Neither truck is superior to the other. Both have their pros and cons, such as everything else in life.

Man I won't even start arguing with you. Thought we were all supposed to be truck guys sharing the same passion? Like I said, neither truck is superior to the other. End of story

And don't try that 1st gens are smaller bullshit. If you were so concerned about being the smallest and most capable off road you wouldn't have a double cab.

First gens are smaller(width) and lighter.
They hold re-sale better. Better MT. Boxed frame & 3.4 V6 is undeniably near bulletproof....

    Doesn't look like a wall-eyed r-tard bull-dog from the front. :boink:

But I think there are quite a few dick measuring contests on this forum on this very topic. :)

If you're concerned about "size" in an off road application, you'd probably want to go with a Suzuki Samurai

    1st Gen has:
A fully boxed frame that traps dirt and moisture making it more prone to rust issues
A ball joint design that allows for catastrophic failure
    Lower crash test ratings
    A more cramped cab design

    2nd Gen has:
1500 lb higher tow rating (not slightly; 1500lbs is a WWII Jeep)
A quieter and more comfortable interior
    Better crash test ratings
More HP and Torque with better gas mileage.

    Both trucks have:
    Lousy leaf springs
    Lots of plastic
    Rattly interiors
    Rusty frames
    Rabid fanboys.

I love both. It's all personal opinion and what you value in a truck. I have a second gen, brother has a first. I don't mind driving either. I like the over all size of his better, but my interior is much more comfortable for me, and the inside space if better for a daily driver. I also like my increased power and towing capabilities.

But at the end of the day who cares? Some 1st gen guy hate 2 gens and think they are an abomination to the word "tacoma." Other guys think that first gens are too old, too small, and don't have enough power. But if you're happy with your truck, what the hell else matters?

Because first gens have those 60/40 bench seats. Idk if 2nd gens have them. If you got a girl in there with you just let the arm rest up and she basically gets to sit in your lap:cool:

I've had both, I like the larger 2nd gen both interior and exterior. The 1st gen was nice but for my needs the 2nd gen is just a better truck.

Grey wire and keyless entry. I like stock.
I think most of it is creature comforts. 2nd gens are waaaayyyy more comfortable to sit in than first gens and it just looks more modern inside and out. 1st gens are a lot more reliable and proven bulletproof due to their age, though 2nd gens are nearly just as proven. Resale is awesome on both too. 2nd gen wins on the bj design, but its not like that's a sale killer to joe schmoe. Both of them are built fairly stout. I DO wish someone would find a way to incorporate a three or four bolt-in designed hub to work with drilled and tapped first gen spindles instead of the hard-as-hell first gen pressed-in wheel bearings we have now. I would never give up my '01's small size. If I was a hauler for a living, I'd own a Ram or Powerstroke. If my truck is a dd first, moving-buddy helper (as mine is), then either Taco won't let you down.

That's why I like the 1st gen, still has that 80s mini truck vibe.
    1st gen: more metal good/bad
    Slightly smaller foot print
    Simple, no frilly interiors
    5vzfe
    2nd gen: more plastic good/bad
    Hauls more
    Dclb
    Nicer interior
    Bigger
