I know that feeling installed a "antique" window customer found had to build casing a trim for it later.

 

Customer was trimming everything. We were finishing up for an event in 2 weeks. Comes to me and asks me to trim the kitchen windows so the can use and show it the next day... It was 4pm on a Friday... Who puts fluted trim in a commercial kitchen...

Yesterday's effort didn't pan out as well as I had hoped due to limited backing in the wall meaning my clamps were too far apart to close up the laminations , so this is version 2.0 with more clamping effort

 

If that doesn't get pressure where you need it you could hot glue blocks to the tile for support.

 

I think this is going to do the trick , I got good glue squeeze out along all the seams and the laminations are tight to each other and the wall

 

That should work pretty well. It's the same thing as a go-bar deck.. bracing is typically glued to the top and back of a guitar body the same way, and they're under constant 120-200 pounds of pressure from the strings.

 

Is that your set up? How does that compare to a vacuum press set up?

Not mine, just a photo I got offline. A friend (who is an actual luthier) has a similar set up though, just he uses strips of pine instead of fiberglass bars. For this application though, I think either way works. Vacuum presses are nice but super expensive so you don't see them much unless its a large company or a luthier with a high profit margin or so. Go-bar decks are much cheaper (most of the ones I know of are home made for pretty cheap) and do the same quality work IMO.

 

Not nailers but how to use them and get the most out of them.

Some of you may have learned that you can eliminate almost 99% of fish hooking of the nails just by how you hold the gun in relation to what you are nailing. Trim nails are not round or pointed. The ends are cut like a wedge. This wedge will take the easy path if it hits an imperfection or an area of higher density. So knowing how the nails are shaped allows you to insure that if it does hook it won't blow out the side. If you hold the nailer parallel to your work piece and nail the edge you are setting the wedge up to go through the side of your work. If you hold it perpendicular the nail can hook and stay inside of the work.

 

Good thing to know. I just read an article in Fine Homebuilding about the new 18ga brad nailers that can shoot up to a 2 1/8" nails. A good deal has changed since my last purchase. I believe mine will shoot up to 1 5/8" (Bostich).
