You took a picture (in-focus and framed perfectly) while driving 110mph? That's mad skills right there.

since these types of threads are like oil threads ;) just do whatever you want when you want really...there's no one way to do it

anyway, i did hard break in (moto style) and changed to synthetic at 500 miles.
the oil that came out was clean (as in no specks in sunlight)
same break in did on a Lexus, again clean, no specks.
Audi, Mercedes, BMW, again clea, no specks
on a Jeep, same break in, but what came out was full of specks, some sizes scared me how "soft" that engine was...(hemi)

i'd say Toyota engines are pretty darn robust, higher tolerances than domestic by far...and german well it's german ;)

My dial indicator and micrometer disagree strongly with this, but I guess you did say rarely, not never.

I like to find a good hill, or grade to drive up & down during the 1st 1K miles. I like to put a solid load (not going WOT or flooring it) but slightly working the motor on the up hill, and engine braking on the down.

I was taught this loads both side of the rings, and is the best way to "Seat the rings"

Eh. No need n for that

yup, rotors to new. They have to be heated and cooled then heated and cooled. Like heat treating metal to make them stronger

. I have almost 100k miles on it, but they were rough miles man. I've had some nice bmw's that handled better at speed, but didn't do very good offroad.

^^ Whats your definition of proper break-in? Everybody has their own version aside from the manufacturer.

Hmmm I must not have read the manual. Pulled out of the dealership and got up to 5000 rpm in 4th in my automatic. Engine sounds like a race truck. Awesome! Put 180000 flawless miles on that 2008 before I got hit and totaled it. Did the same with my 2014. Runs great.

I think it's like smoking and cancer, cholesterol and heart disease, etc. It's impossible to prove that any particular vehicle lasted as long as it did (or died early) because of what its owner did many years and many thousand miles ago. I just tried to do what the manual recommended, on the 'what could it hurt' theory.

I agree with those who say it's no longer necessary. You can drive it normally until the recommended first change interval. That said, I plan to drive my Tacoma for a long time so just for the heck of it I went the extra mile and drained mine after about 500 miles, replaced the Toyota OEM filter with a new one, and put Mobil1 synthetic in, which is what I plan to run in it. Overkill, but that's what I did.
