I learned this a long time ago however in hard , old growth VG Fir , it sometimes makes no difference so I now sight the end grain of boards before I choose their orientation so that the growth rings are parallel or slant away from the finished edge

VG fir isn't to popular here so I haven't played with it yet. Certain high density woods are impossible to hand nail. Brazilian cherry is one that's incredibly difficult to work. Dulls blades and bits extremely fast. Grain and knots throw a wrench in things but with the material the average homeowner will work with these steps help a lot.

So they only cut the 15g that way? I think that would actually mess me up after so long of the other way.

What advantages does the 15g have over the 16g it looks like a round nail so it should drive truer

It is a round nail and the stronger shank is better for me with Fir , the downside is the head is a bit bigger

I'd post this in plumber thread but figured you guys could help. To take the cartridge out do I put a pipe wrench on threads w/black arrow and turn the nut with the red one? I would go ahead and do it but if it is real tight I wouldn't be sure if that is the way to do it or not. I think it may be a moen but there is no identification either on od or id of the spout. thx

The bottom nut is mounting nut. The top nut is the stem. Try not to strip the threads. Put a rag around and grab with pliers for back up or use a strap wrench.
