    Hey all,

I have the regular stereo system touch screen and such minus the navigation. I am looking to upgrade just the speakers. I want better sound but really would like to keep the factory head unit. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

I researched the hell out of this and redid my 2014. You won't get much of an improvement without an amp. The head unit puts out a horrible signal and is underpowered. So you'll want an amp- but the head unit also adds a nasty hiss to the sound floor, so you'll want a digital signal processor of some sort. By my research, Audison's bitTEN is the only one that eliminates it, but it's $500.

If you do upgrade just the speakers, find ones that are super efficient, 92db or better if you can.

If you can't afford to do it all at once, you should upgrade audio components in this order:

Head unit > Speakers > Amp > Subs

Otherwise, don't waste your money on doing new speakers with the crappy stock deck. Power output is so low that if you put decent speakers in your deck may not have enough power to push them and you could actually hurt your sound. You'd have to get something incredibly efficient or low on power consumption and then if you ever did upgrade your deck or get an amp you'd need to replace them again anyway.

Bottom line, garbage in is garbage out and doesn't matter what is playing the garbage.

Use me as an example.... I bought new Pioneer speakers for my '07 Camry and new Pioneer tweeters last week , none of which I can use! The stock stereo is 2 ohms impedance.. who does that? I listened to Crutchfield, obviously they have no clue about Camrys.

    Welcome to tw lol

If you want to keep you factory head. Then amp and speakers. Don't need a big fancy amp for it either. But you do need one

Usually how it works out. I've got a 5ch amp sitting here, speakers, tweeters, subs on the way and an appointment for install on Friday. I'm sure it will cost me more than I was planning on going on. That's the nature of the beast unfortunately but in the end it's worth it as long as you do your research & buy the right gear at the right price. One thing is for sure; if you put limited effort into research you will overpay, get mismatched components and be unhappy with the performance or both. I already know how my setup is going to sound once it's done and "I excite!" [/borat] but this ain't my first rodeo either.

You can also do this. You can do converters and other band-aid fixes but it will never be as good as selecting components that all work with each other from the beginning. Remember that all an amp does is amplify. It's a dumb object that amplifies whatever you put into it. This means not only does it amplify the bass and treble but it also amplifies the noise that exists and is prevalent in the factory decks that barely put out any power at all. You can also do this in an affordable fashion as well especially when you factor in what some are willing to pay for the factory equipment you remove.

I started off replacing HU with a Pioneer 3500bhs. Noticed a little improvement. Couple of weeks ago I upgraded speakers to Hybrid Audio Technologies Mirus series (thanks Mr. Marv) and they are absolutely amazing. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Hey man, I would PM Mr. Marv (just click on his name and it will take you to his profile). I'm going through the same thing right now (i.e., keeping stock head unit and upgrading system).

He is super nice and incredibly responsive. Just search around TW and everyone gives him awesome reviews. We've got a design working now w/the stock head unit.
