285/70/17 problems?

Hey guys, searched quite a bit on here and couldn't fin the answer i was looking for.

I have a set of 265/70/17 terra graps in my garage, planning to install them at some point this week. But, not that I see my lift, I'm thinking I may want to go bigger. I installed the 5100's at full height (+taco lean spacer), I think it gave me closer to a 2.75-3" in the front, and I got almost a full 2.5" in the rear.

Has anyone had any problems with a 285/70/17? I have a set of 1.25 wheel spacers on right now, so i don't think I will rub on the cab, and the mud flaps are off.

I am more worried about a big loss in MPG (i drive about 90 miles a day hwy), worried about sluggish throttle response and the gears. They are about an inch difference than the 265's as you guys know.

I've got 285s and the power is fine but the gas mileage will suffer a little.

 

I run 285/70/17 range E Toyo MT's and get about 18.5 hwy on my 100 mile daily commute. You should be fine. You can stuff bigger tires but will have to cut if you offroad

 

Luckily Nitto makes (and discount sells) the lighter load rated tire in the 285's, just don't know how much they weigh.

What do you think the mileage difference is?

 

Don't do a whole lot of off roading yet. 285/70/17 is the largest I would want.

 

Then you will be fine. With spacers you should be able to run up to the 285 without rubbing too much and with 265 you shouldn't rub at all under normal circumstances.

 

Sweet. I think the terra grapplers will probably be lighter than your MT's (or so one would think), have you had any issues with the 285 constantly searching for gears uphill? Loss of power?

There is some power loss for sure. I added a Flowmaster catback at the same time though so that negated some of it. You will notice the power loss but overall it's something I personally can live with fine. Your truck will gear down going up a steep hill or when towing. I haven't had some of the hunting problems that others do but like I said it will gear down from time to time just to compensate for the tires. Overall IMO if you like the look and want the tires get an UltraGauge and go for it. I wouldn't do it any different if I did it over

I ordered a set of the 285/70/17's today and dropped my 265's off at UPS. Discount Tire is cake to work with. They even paid return shipping no questions asked.

I was wondering the same thing about rubbing. I'm getting ready to put on my lift, bilstein 5100s set at 2.5" and a 1.5" AAL in the back. I ordered the 285/70/17 trail grapplers with xd addicts which have a 4.5" backspacing. Would that rub or should I get wheel spacers as well?

 

I'll let you know tomorrow. I have a 5100 2.5 front, and a 1.5AAL rear. Getting them installed in the morning.

I would ditch your mud flaps. Those are the first to rub.

 

any update on this? would like to hear how the power feels after the bigger tires. I drive 50-100 miles per day

 

You will notice the power difference when climbing hills and trying to pass on two lanes or similar circumstances but it's never been a deal breaker for me personally. I drive 100+ miles a day in my Taco and don't have a light foot and she is still more than capable of anything I need out of her. besides it justifies my need for a S/C
