Hey guys, after the warm welcome in the new members section I figured i might as well start up a 'build thread' of sorts for my truck to keep track of everything i do to my taco. Im not going to go totally custom or crazy, but just a few things to make my truck my own. Ive been browsing through a lot of threads the past few days and I am amazed at some of the little tweaks you guys have come up with to make these trucks even better.

So far she is bone stock but my plans are (in no particular order):

    - husky floor liners (black or grey?)
-wet okole seat covers (not sure on color, but i want rear seat pockets)
-tonneau cover (not sure which type yet)
    -side step bars
-bed lights similar to unholycumulus' set up (very cool idea!)
-overhead console w/ compass and temp (if i can find one)
-mudflap shortening (or take off the fronts? dont want paint damage)
-mag light mount on drivers seat
    -tsilliker's heated mirror mod
    -fog lights
-bed shelf/cargo box of some sort
    -LED dome light
-tailgate lock? (apparently they get stolen a lot?)
-bluetooth (preferably on the steering wheel)
-map lights on with domelights mod
-double din stereo w/nav and ipod connectivity
-front windows tinted to match privacy glass
-cold air intake? depends on how bad it will hurt my mpg
    -additional D-rings

i guess thats it for now.....and i just realized how long that list is and how much $ thats going to take haha. oh well, looks like i have my work cut out for me. im looking foward to posting up some pics and asking for some tips and maybe helping someone else out. if anyone has any suggestions of some more things i could add to this list please fee free to speak up. thanks in advance guys, ttys

Nice List of intended mods. My 2 cents on a couple of them.

Does you truck have the side airbags? If it does they come out of the drivers seat, may screw up the plan for seat covers.

Tailgate lock, do the hose clamp mod, one or two bucks tops.

20% tint on the front will match the back almost perfect.

Save money and skip the CAI, buy a drop in filter if you must, it's already a CAI from the factory. IMHO

Extra D-rings, number of places to pick them up, any place but the dealer. Install them under the bed bolts.

    Oh yea.

I have a Black Sand Pearl 2009. The black Husky liners look great. Don't get grey - they looked awful. I had both in at my aftermarket supplier. I choose black.

I was told from a tint shop the privacy glass is usually 35%. Although I have never seen it in person you very well may be right with the 20%. I went with 50% because I don't need the attention from the popo.

hey thank you for the response. i do have the side airbags and i was bummed out about that until i called up okole and they said that their seat covers will work with the side airbags and they passed all these safety tests and what not ( i hope that doesnt mean they crashed up a bunch of tacos lol).

thank you for your input on the cold air too, i took a look at the stock setup today and realized that you are right, there isnt much improvement so i might as well just get the k&n filter for the stock airbox. also considering i leased it i dont want them to say that i voided any kind of warrenty or broke any part of the deal.

and as for the d-rings...i wish i bought some already! i picked up 4 sheets of 1/2 sheetrock today at depot and i looped my tiedowns through the d-rings in the back but once i tightened it down the front lifted up a bit so wanted to secure it down better but i had nothing to loop to other than the rail anchors. makes you wonder why they couldnt just widen the bed that extra 1 1/2" or so on either side to get a 48" board to lay flat between the wheel wells. oh well. now i will be hunting for d-rings i suppose. thanks again for all your input

thanks! this is something ive been debating. i cant really tell in the photos on the computer screen how it looks with the grey interior but the grey did look alittle off. i like the idea of the black to set off the color of the dash and carpet and also match little things like the shift boot and soon my new seat covers. do you have any pics by any chance? also is yours manual? from what ive read its only a matter of doing alittle trimming to make the clutch clear the mats.....or was that the weather techs......hmm ive read so much its all kind of blended together

thank you very much thats quite an offer. i dunno if ill need the c/o's or headers since i only leased my taco and dont want to go too too crazy (even though i really want to haha) but id def be interested in meeting some fellow taco owners up my way. i was bs'ing with a 08 DC owner in the home depot parking lot today, its good to find people with similar interests. ive met some really cool people on my classic camaro forums and even rx7 forums too. where abouts in ny are your buddies? im in like mid/east long island

i forgot what the tint guy said as far as the % but he said it would cost $75 so next paycheck ill probably go for it. he is also trying to sell me the remote start, but im leary about putting one of those on a standard shift car again, i have a friend who had a very bad experience with a remote start i put in his gf's civic. long story short when he dropped it off in her driveway he showed her how to start it from the apartment, but he has a bad habit of leaving the car in gear. so yeah his $110 birthday present ended up costing him about 700 in garage door repair and grille/hood replacement. doh! cant say i didnt warn him it wasnt wired to the neutral safety...lol

Your comment about setting off the colour is exactly the way the huskys look - they accent what needs accenting. Huskys grey is a little off. Husky black is perfect match. Sorry no photos.

I have the 5 speed manual and choose huskys because of the weathertech cut issue. The huskys fit perfect with the manual clutch.

Nice to know that the balck mats look better than the grey in a BSP Taco.

BTW your Tacoma looks great. I have the same one but without the SR5 package. I am slowly modding the Tacoma with the features I want.

Be careful on the tint. I have friends that live in NY and they tell me the police check the tint very carefully.

thanks for the kudos on the truck. i almost got one without the sr5 package but the two things that bugged me was the only 2 speed wipers and no sliding rear window. i know you can probably mod the wipers, there are some real electrial dynamos on this forum, but the glass wouldnt be so easy short of having safelite come and put in a rear window you found on ebay or something.

thanks for the advice with the tint, its true the cops up here do like to nit-pick but they use things like that as an excuse to pull you over in the first place and if they find anything after that then they have a reason, but if they dont find anything then they usually ignore the minor stuff like tint, tail light, or even a license plate cover (even the ones the dealer puts on are actually illegal believe it or not). im going to risk it just so the rears match the front.

Well guys after weeks of searching for a used cap that would fit.....I hit the jackpot. I was at work searching the auto parts section of the local craigslist and sure enough there is a few hour old post on a 2006 tacoma cap. I promptly emailed the guy and waited, the next day I got a response that he did in fact still have it and that he wanted $300!!. I got his address, stopped at the ATM, and made a b-line for his place lol. I got there and i was in shock, it was an ARE 100 series(i think) but it had the front sliding window, carpeted interior, dome light, mounts right on the utility track. It was perfect. Granted its painted red, but for $300 over $1525 the guy showed me that he originally paid, id say i got the deal of the year and him and his uncle even gave me a hand putting it on. Now this was all at like 9-10pm at night, the next morning I got out there and gave the rear glass a try with the key he gave me but the lock wouldnt budge. Then with me being the genius I am i decided to persuade the handle with a rubber mallot.....needless to say that was a bad move, i snapped the handle right off. In addition to that there are 2 or 3 spots in the gel coat that are dimpled and need some repair. But aside from those things (which is my guess why the guy only wanted $300) I think it was still a steal. Here are some pics for you guys who just had to sit and read through this paragraph lol.....

    here it is that night

    1108091859_afd61261ebe701f169bf7a179b0d130776bde4b5.jpg

    then the next morning...

then came the fun part....taking it off...BY MYSELF!! (not something i suggest btw)

So there it is. Im going to get the stuff from the body shop supply house on friday and hopefully work on it this weekend. my buddy is letting me borrow his booth for $75 to spray it. I'll take care of those two trouble spots, hit them and the surrounding area with some dp-90 let that dry, scuff and block the entire thing and be done with it. Oh perhaps someone here might know, but where can I order parts for this thing? I dont really want to go back all the way to the "nearest" ARE dealer here because they had a bad attitude and are just really far, Im thinking there has to be a place online that i could get some accesories like a new handle/lock set, the plug to wire in my 3rd brake light, weather stripping, the colored strip for the bottom edge of the cap, and just misc. parts. Thanks in advance guys and remember, keep searching because you never know when someone is getting rid of something on the cheap, figure most stuff from an 05 and up taco will fit up the the current body style and those trucks are getting to be 5 years old now, so keep your eyes peeled and it will pay off!

oh yeah here is the tag riveted on the inside, any ideas on what particular model i have here?

well i have been slacking when its been coming to posting, ive been spending all of my time i have for the computer over on my camaro and rx7 forums, and saying my goodbyes at the blazer forums lol. Well I figured Id share some more pics of the taco, i know how people love pictures on these forums haha. here are some pics of the taco getting used like a truck as it very well should be:

    1027091244_4fc9515a560aed0b924964e62fd053d60b3df9ef.jpg

    0914091626_16aa673234718e9da08069a83f70808ee30a89eb.jpg

aside from lugging tools and car parts and home depot runs the truck has made one pretty good sized haul. I recently sold an engine on ebay and had to load it onto a pallet and bring it to the shipping hub for the guy. the first thing i ran into was that i had to trim the width of the pallet down to 42" so it fit between the wheel wells of the taco (my only complaint about it). then after that i went on autopiolt building the crate and loading it up just to realize that my original plan was to load the crate up while i was in the truck to avoid having to lift a 900lb crate into the truck....whoops. luckly i had the engine crane which i was planning on lifting the crate and block into the truck with anyway and that handled the extra weight no problem. so here are some pics from that adventure, and that is probably the heaviest thing i have hauled so far lol:

    1101091226a_a54f1a82c42b5b7a2e69f1fdf8860470c57154f1.jpg

well there they are. unfortunatly I never thought to check if that TSB for the leaf springs applied to me before i did this haul, and sure enough when i just checked it out after reading another thread i realized that i do only have the 3 leafs, am i right in assuming that im a candidate for the TSB? heres what ive got...

the truck was very low with that crate in it but the ride wasnt super terrible considering all the weight in it and from what i remember it still had a bit of spring to it so im not sure if it was totally bottomed out. I would like to get it fixed if i have the repair coming to me because its not too rare an occurance for me to have a few small block chevy motors to move around or even a big block or two, so id rather have my truck at its full potential. thanks in advance for your input guys.

I dont know why toyota wouldnt put those strong d rings in towards the front of the bed also, thats where you really need them in my opinion, id want to hold down the front of what ever material i was hauling esp if the tailgate is closed and the tail end of a lets say 4x8 sheet of ply is getting the full force of highway speed winds. i put straps up and around the back end of the board but im still paranoid that the front will lift up and out of the bed and make a big mess on the highway behind me. oh well, soon enough i will be able to secure everything down right to the bottom of the bed with as many ratchet straps as i want. granted im probably worrying over nothing and its overkill but its peace of mind for me. well sorry for the laspe in posting and im looking foward to getting input from you guys.

Looks like it is the CX Series topper. Good find, now you just need to find a painter.
