Just a little rant about my lovely dealership experience yesterday:

So, I've been trying to get a new Tacoma for the past month (DC LB 4x4 Sport MGM). CARS wiped out the '09 inventory last month, so I had to wait for the '10's to come out. No biggie. I built my truck online and it was sent out to all of the local dealers. All five have called me at some point to tell me they located the truck I've been looking for. Every time I met with a sales rep in person, they tried to sell me a similar truck off of their lot or in the local area. Finally, I talked to one competent sales rep (so I thought) that found my exact truck coming into the port in Houston on Sep 4. He ordered it and I went in yesterday to put down my deposit. He pulls out the paperwork and says, "Yeah, it should be here by Tuesday. The first thing I noticed was that it was a couple thousand $$ less than I had been offered any where is. This was due to the fact that he ordered a PreRunner. No sale on that one. So we located another one coming in the following weak. He prints out the specs and I noticed the model # was for a short bed. He says "No, we have this same model on our lot". So we go look at it. Short bed of course. So I looked at his computer, found my correct model# and color code and watched as he placed the order. Now i have been pushed back two weeks.
To make matters just a little bit worse, I have already "verbally" sold my 1st Gen truck to someone who wants to take possession early next week. The only reason I put my truck on the market was b/c I thought my new one was going to be here in a few days. So now I have to find transportation for about a week and a half.

Sorry about the long rant, I needed to vent a little.
    Thanks

Don't be surprised if it takes quite a bit longer than they say for the new one to come in too. I ordered mine that way also. It took a couple weeks longer than they said it would before it showed up.

If you didn't, you should have talked to the fleet manager and deal through him/her only. You will/might get a lower price through the fleet manager rather than a sales guy as well.

They had 4 or 5 of the exact Tacomas in CA that I wanted, color, 4x4, cab, AC slider window only, etc. After a couple e-mails, I went to the dealer, talked to the fleet manager in person and told him exactlly what I wanted and what I was willing to pay. He told me how many they had in the area and it was delivered in 2 days. When I picked it up, I sold my old truck a few days later. Due to my credit score being higher than I thought it was, I ended up paying 50-80 bucks a month less.

Frustrating. Sounds pretty unprofessional to me. I would expect better credibility from them. I thought when you did an online build, you are assingned a VIN no. and you get built what you ask for on the line. I guess not??

Maybe the stealerships just want to get rid of what they have left over, despite all '09s being consumed.

All dealers i have seen always lie, not that they are stupid, just unscrupulious(spelling?). Everytime you tell em exactly what you want they have you! "oh yea, that model sells fast" ,"we have some on the rail coming here", anything to bait you in.They are liars, never trust one.
When i went in i looked at Tundras to throw them off... hmm , tell me about the Tacoma, flip flop never commit. Then i "settled" on the one i wanted( wanted vlue no big deal). And when you settle on a payment, they still lie, the finance person tries some more while you are relaxed and think the fight is over.
I heard one salesman say to another "THANK GOD FOR TELEMARKETERS! or WE would be the lowest form of defication infecting the earth!!" ...but thats just my experience:D

Yea, I was looking for a Prerunner, 4 cyl, 5 speed. The SR5 and other minor options, eehhh, ok. I could only find a couple on line.

"We can get that for you." "We'll do a dealer trade."

Wasted an hour at one place. Actually bought the truck at another, and due to a bit of an odd way of doing things (being in a hurry) it was the base 5 lugger--we snatched our check back and left. Another place would not answer the question via e-mail--"do you have this model..." He emails back, "call and we can talk payments..."

I know some people buy based on payments, but I doubt even the dumbest of the dumb would take whatever pile they rolled out just because the payment was right...

    I feel your pain.

I love it when they say " whats a comfortable payment" , so i tell them. ( i know theyre gonna go for 84 96 or so payments). They say thats a good number, so i say "wow really for 36 months"? just to test them. They will lie on your trade in , everything
Hey Zwild, bring 2-3 kids in , on a friday, late in the day holiday weekend, and go in withthe attitude "I have all night"

Yeah, hopefully my truck is really "locked in". I have a deposit on it, but i will be quick to snatch that check back up if they f it up again. And I did speak with the sales manager. He was the one that confirmed my truck ordered was the correct one and showed me all the specs on the screen. Not to say that could have been a truck that was already sold, but I did see the date it was arriving at the port.
I wish I could just go online, build my truck, and have it delivered to my house. But that would be too easy.

That stinks. Maybe they should offer you $35/day off for every day that you don't have it. ;)

I am a Toyota sales person and I also drive an 06 tacoma TRD Offroad Access cab. All you guys say sales people are all liars. Some are but not all. I actually say the opposite. Buyers are liars. A guy who is there to buy that day might say..."I'm just looking" a lie. A customer might say I have a dentist apt and can only stay for a short while.....a lie. FYI...buying a vehicle takes a little time.....it's not like buying a loaf of bread. It takes time. Whatever. As for ETA's of an incoming vehicle.....the factory puts an ETA on it. It goes on a truck and is transported. If it comes later than the factory ETA....how is that a salesmans fault? Hey guys....factory ETA's are almost always NOT accurate but it's all we have to go by. Go in....be straight up...tell them what you want...they will go get it. If what you want is not on the lot....then you have to wait. A salesman cannot magically pull your Tacoma out of his ass. You have to be willing to wait if you are picky. Also while I'm on a rant.....what is up with the bulk of car buyers taking months to buy a car but also stroking a salesperson for months while he's at it? As a consumer....I research and take time to buy things too.....but I do my own research at home. I don't go break the balls of a salesman who is trying to earn a living months before I'm ready to buy. I figure out what I want and when I'm ready I go buy it that day. i don't screw around. I don't waste the time of a salesman when I know I'm not gonna buy. For a commission salesperson....time is money. He shouldnt have to hold your hand and wipe your ass for two months just to make a couple hundred bucks on a flat commission. Figure out what you want....how much your willing to pay and THEN go see if your salesperson can do it or not. It's actually quite simple to do. Sales people become jaded because we have to deal with lots of assholes. Thankfully we deal with some good people too...but the bulk of the public are strokers.

I think he as reffering to claiming to have one, not the turn around to order one.

Its not so much the salesman you meet , but the 3 man team that tries to confuse you when we buy. I always bought the day or 2 ( or left and never returned) from when i went in, did my home work on several variation of models, interest rates and terms.
Speaking of Cali and oregon salesmen only, its alway been the usual lines.... that model has 4wd. then they would claim a $2000 premium not listed in the price
    comfortable payment
    false/skewed numbers
innaccurate tradein data (Broadway Toyota redid it 5x all the while i corrected them)
Yea, we have those models .... come on in
even lies about the plastic intake being a enrgy storage for acceleration.
I just got tired of being polite= take the sucker for what he is worth. If i said i'd like to buy that red reg cab tacoma, they would know they have me... "oh yea, our last one they been selling like hotcakes"

In all fairness I think Markola is the guy that greets us and test drives with us. Usually that person is NOT THERE, in my experience, when the finance/shell game crowd goes 2 to one on us and gets mad when you pull out the homework and calculator.

I wouldn't have put a deposit down. If they want to sell you your truck, they will get it for you, end of story.

There's always a great salesman - he's just hard to find. Keep looking.

Well, in my case, the salesman made a small mistake--he forgot to put the word "Prerunner" into the deal. OK, we were in a hurry, I should have checked at every step of the way. I thought that guy was OK.

BUT: The sales "Manager" lied about getting me the truck I wanted. I told him where it was, he said it was no longer available. (Funny, I went and bought it (30 more miles away) the next day) He said he would find me one and call by noon the next day. No call, and the salesman didn't come on 'til 1, finally calling me at 4:30 as I was driving home in the truck from the other dealer...

I was in sales for 16 years with a transportation company. It finally came to the point where since I was honest with people, tried to fix things, didn't like buying them lunch instead of addressing their concerns, that I was "not suited" to sales. Auto sales isn't about knowing anything about the vehicle--that's just a bonus when you run into a guy who knows anything. It is mostly about sizing up the buyer, and putting up with what Marcola talks about with customers telling you tall tales etc. PLUS having to dance around when the dealership/manufacturer doesn't deliver on your good faith promises.

As Tacoyota points out, it's the two other guys who can really piss you off--in my case, the guy telling me I should really buy an automatic, that an automatic isn't that expensive to replace and a bunch of other crap aimed at trying to get me to take what he had on the lot at one dealer. Then he other guy lying about dealer trades etcetcetc...
