I just lifted and put 285 all terrains yet. Haven't hit the dirt with the new tires. But they did fine on my old truck!

    :)

Got back to San Marcos at 3:12 this afternoon... Made several notes on the run to Tucson and back... 890 miles round trip with some in town driving in Tucson. I topped before and after the in town driving to get as accurate a highway mileage set of figures as possible. I also checked my odometer against the highway mile posts (big surprise there).

No load in truck beyond me and my suitcase, and small ice chest with some frozen water bottles in it. I drove the posted speed limit or within 2 mph. It was 65-70 in California and 65-75 in Arizona with a brief 55 section near Yuma.

I will post here for my local San Diego amigos to read... but, because it applies to all, I will find a thread in the correct forum or start a new one for the data I collected.

[NOTE: this may be too much information for general interest, so please just pass on by. I like visualizing data figures, but I am not expecting a lot of love for posting it... well maybe from Doug, but that's all! LOL ]

    EAST BOUND:
I used Premium 91 octane from Shell and Chevron. (West bound I used Regular 87 octane from the same stations).

Left San Marcos at 8:37am Saturday with full tank of 91 octane (I had about 4 gallons of 87 octane in the tank when I filled it)

Took 2 ten minute breaks at Buckman Springs (70 miles) and El Centro (126 miles) rest stops.

Arrived at Yuma (191 miles) about 11:44 am... had lunch, topped gas tank, left at 12:26:
Fuel tank mileage: 199.4, 10.9 gallons to top off, 18.3 MPG (91 octane, $3.73/ gal Chevron).

Arrive Tucson at 4:25 pm. Got gas with 239.5 miles, 13.0 gallons to top off, 18.4 MPG (91 octane). Filled with 87 octane ($3.21/ gal Shell)

WEST BOUND, left 7:15 am today: Topped tank leaving Tucson with Shell 87 octane ($3.25/ gal).

25 minute break at Sentinel Rest Stop (80 miles east of Yuma).

Yuma (45 min. lunch & fuel break 11:15-12 noon). 229.4 miles from Tucson, 11.7 gallons of Chevron 87 ($3.49/ gal) gives 19.6 MPG Note, this is the best mileage I have ever recorded... and just over my previous high of 19.2 using Mexican gas, but heavily loaded then.

15 min break at Buckman Springs rest stop.

Arrive San Marcos Costco at 3:12 pm after 187.5 miles from Tucson. Filled with 10.6 gallons gives 17.6 MPG

The main discovery I made is that there is no noticeable difference using higher priced premium gas in our trucks... it was around 18 mpg both ways.

    ODOMETER CHECK:

As you might know, I talk about how the 265/75-16 tires (1" taller than stock) actually make the speedometer read correctly (ie. 70 mph on speedo and GPS match). On the stock 265/70-16 tires if I was going 70 on the speedo my GPS said I was really only going ~67 mph.

According to my GPS the trip should have been 431 miles, but I was closer to 421 miles, both ways.

Along the long desert highway east of Yuma, I compared my odometer with the highway mileage posts, for 40 miles. My odometer runs SLOW, while my speedometer runs correct. (Yes, I know this has been mentioned by others)

    MILE 10 Tacoma = 9.7
    MILE 20 Tacoma = 19.4
    MILE 40 Tacoma = 39.0

This would explain why after 400 miles, my odometer gave 10 miles lower a figure than the GPS said it was from San Marcos to Tucson.

Now, my fuel mileage is actually a little better than I recorded since for every 200 miles on the odometer, I actually traveled closer to 205. So the 18.3 MPG figure in Yuma is really more like 18.8...

Anyway, I may play with these numbers or reword this post when I put it on the other forum for technical info. I just wanted to get this out while it was fresh in my mind and I remember what my notes mean... I am pooped from a long drive! See you guys later! :p:cool:

Good info. I have also told a couple people that were looking at trucks around 100k to take a gps with them on the test drive especially with aftermarket tires. If the odometer is off it could really have more miles than the clock says. You might still buy the truck but just a bargaining point.

Anyone know if a bad ball joint would make a clicking sound when going from reverse to drive or vice versa? I brought this up a while back and Chris said he had the same noise but its getting worse. Im starting to hear bad things about light racings ball joints and got me wondering

Do the 2nd gen have the floating pads design?
Could be the brake pads shifting if it's not terribly loud.

Have you ever re-greased them? I was getting the same clicking and it drove me nuts. I pulled the boots and wiped the crappy grease they used (which seemed minimal to me). And packed them with a Molly fortified grease. I also had Jason replace my LCA ball joints and tie rod bj's with Moog's with zerks. Clicking is gone...although one of the tie rid end boots already f'ing ripped. I would just start with the UCA joints and go from there.

It's not the U-joints in the drive shaft? Are you sure that noise is coming up front?
