Which factory was it built in?

If I recall correctly, the Tacomas have been made at various factories. How can I tell which factory mine came from? Is there something in the VIN stating where it was produced?

    http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Vehicl...ers_(VIN_codes)/Toyota/VIN_Codes#Vehicle_Type

It is indicated in the 11th position of your VIN.

    Position 11
    Code Description
    0-9 (All numeric) Japan
    A Onnaing-Valenciennes, France (TMMF)
    C Cambridge, ON, CA (TMMC)
    E United Kingdom
    K Japan
    M Baja CA, Mexico (TMMBC)
    N Kolín, Czech Republic (TPCA)
R Lafayette, IN, US (Subaru of Indiana Automotive)
    S Princeton, IN, US
    U Georgetown, KY, US
    W Woodstock, ON, CA (TMMC)
    X San Antonio, TX, US
    Z Fremont, CA, US (NUMMI)

I believe Tacomas have only been made in Baja, San Antonio, and Fremont.

I would take the information on that site with some caution. The sources they claim to use are only as recent as 2000, and the links don't even work. Some of the codes are standard across manufacturers, but plant is clearly toyota specific so it could easily be wrong.

Thanks for the info. If everything is correct mine was made in Fremont, CA.

Not that anyone asked or cares, but holy fuck is the VIN system retarded as shit. This question got me curious so I went digging for information. The manufacturers are required to submit the identifying information to the NHSTA but those worthless fucks don't organize it at all. They stopped labeling the files with anything resembling an informative title in 2009. The manufacturers just send a fax to the NHSTA and it is assigned an file name based on when it was received. Each new fax is an amendment to the previous one. I suppose someone keeps a masterlist somewhere that just has the latest correct information, but I can't find it.

Anyway, straight from the horses mouth here are the toyota specific vin decoders for a couple of specific model year tacomas

    2012 ftp://safercar.gov/MfrMail/ORG6810.pdf
    2011 ftp://safercar.gov/MfrMail/ORG5781.pdf
    2006 ftp://ftp.nhtsa.dot.gov/mfrmail/01-022-N11B-10724.pdf

The main reason I didn't trust that wikibooks site is that the engine codes were incomplete.

I could be wrong but I've been told with second gen tacomas are either made in Texas or Mexico. If the first digit of the vin is a 5 then it's Texas and if it's a 3 it's Mexico. My first is a 5 and the tag in the door says made in USA toyota corp San Antonio Texas.

My DCSB is a Baja truck. I think for a while at least, all DCSBs were Baja trucks.

According the info on another thread, The Baja plant only builds DC V6 models and ships most of them to the western part of the US. The San Antonio plant builds AC and RC models as well as DC, which are shipped east.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
earlier 2nd gen models were also built in the NUMMI Cali plant before the San Antonio one opened.

my 07 and 09 DCs were built in Mexico and purchased in SC/NC.

EDIT: it should also say specifically on the driver's door sticker where it was manufactured w/o worrying about the VIN.

Mine clearly has a tag in the doorway saying is was made by Toyota de Baja California (made in late 2009). I see car hauler trucks with new Tacomas headed north from Mexico quite often... here in San Diego county... Saw one 2 days ago full of new Tacomas.

I think I heard that all 4 door Tacomas are made at the factory, east of Tijuana. I posted photos when I drove by the factory in 2010... along Hwy. 2 between Tijuana and Tecate.

The door sticker should say exactly where it was made without looking at the VIN. My 13' V6 DC was a custom order made in Mexico, and it was shipped by boat into port in New Jersey on the east coast.

That is surprising that trucking to Jersey from San Diego/Tijuana is more costly than shipping it around so much of North America, via the Panama Canal??

You figure a car hauler can carry what, 15 trucks? A boat, probably 200? Cost per unit is lower even though the total cost is significantly more.
