Lift with VSC answer.....

For for what it's worth, I brought this up yesterday while I was there to have my 10k service. After installing the Baja suspension kit and having the truck re-aligned, I had not addressed the VSC recalibration. According to the service adviser, following a series of annoying questions I'll spare the details on, if the light's not on it's fine. He was going to write up for it to be done anyway, but told me it'd run about $45, so I declined.

Sub'd I'm having this problem after I got a DMZ SAU kit installed (have TC +2 lt in the front). Kicked on while I was on an on ramp and made me swerve almost hitting a barricade. Happened a few more times while driving through some mountains on turns with very steep drop offs. I need to get an alignment and I'll have this done at the same time and see if it fixes anything. Also having my Toyota mechanic friend look into it for me.

I had the VSC light come on after I put on a lift and had my truck aligned. It was showing an invalid zero point of steering code. I tried the one from the service manual but it seemed to leave out the step of touching the SST/Paperclip together four times witihin 8 seconds with the ignition on. I believe that is what clears out the calibration. I know the link says it's for the 4runner but it workd on my 2013 Tacoma TRD Sport.

Yeah it is the same steps laid out in a little different format with the addition of the downhill assist control and and crawl control that may be the cause of some peoples issue.

 

I just found this thread. It's a good read. I had VSC issues on on '09 4x4 AC OR. I was running a 3/2 leveling kit and 285/75/16 Toyo M/T's. Taking a sharp corner at over 30 mph, hitting rough pavement while on a curve, etc. would set off my VSC. I had no idea what the problem was, but my best guess was the wider tires rubbing. I found another thread talking about VSC issues and it explained a lot.

Fast forward to my current '14 4x4 DCSB OR. I have a 3" OME lift and 265/75/16 Cooper ST Maxx. I have tried the same maneuvers on the same roads as before and haven't had 1 issue with the VSC kicking on. I am wondering if it is the tire size/type, or the lift/suspension geometry?

 

I've read and looked into everything that I know so far, this a great thread, understanding they are no true fix like getting alignment to fix the geometry after lifting, there is no real " sensor" fix after lift...that I know of, there are so many variables at play too, like where I love tight 2 lane twisty roads...I have 2 spots where I have to be below 30-35 or it'll beep pulsate and try to send me in opposing lane, where ppl live is different like trucks are different...a little background info here...I had a 2012 dcsb or , added 3" old man emu and 18" after market wheels and 285/65 18's, rode waaaay to stiff, actually took lift off and sold truck there after, I recently go another 2012 tacoma, dcsb or also, it rode "rough" compared to the 1st 12' on highway..and the new 12 has way more pep in its step compared to old 12 too...and factory the new 12 didn't beep, pulsate near as bad as the old 12 did...have said this I lifted the new 12 too, but with 1.5" hell bent steel top plate spacer, fat bobs 1/2" replacement isolator, total chaos uca's, toy tec drops, ready lift 2" blocks, 285/75's on factory wheels and spider trax's spacers, it's ride so much better, I'd say factory but a little firmer, I'm very pleased with this set up...I still have the beeping pulsating problem in the problematic curves I speak of...but no where near as bad as the old 12, both trucks were aligned at same shop and neither truck had the vsc light come on and stay on after lifting like said in this thread...I have not tried the zero calibration at dealer, in fear of wasting time and money, or try the jumper wires in fear of making it worse than is now right now it is manageable but still pesky problem....just thought I'd share my experiences with this problem... The present truck will beep and pulsate when in a " off chamber" tight curve while decelerating, i wanna say it help accelerating but it beep and pulsates and is over before ya know it....

This thread doesn't try to solve an issue with the VSC light coming on and staying on , and why would you not want to try to recalibrate your VSC if you are having problems with it ? It's a factory Toyota procedure .

 

I try the paper clip method several,times this morning, it done nothing, I feel no less sensitivity, the only thing that's going to keep my truck from beeping is unplug wheel,sensor, do the bypass switch mod, pull a fuse, or just drive super slow like I'm on egg shells....everyones situation is different, this didn't work for me...I followed the PDF instructions in 1st post, ignition on, paper clip, in the 4th pins counting from gear shift side, 4 or more times in 8 seconds, leave it in, watch lights go crazy, remove paper clip, turn ignition off.....put paper clip back in said spots, turn ignition on, wait a few seconds, remove clip, turn off and test right?

 

Has anyone tried shimming the sensor like the tundra post, or can u repositions sensors or anything...I'd love to get results and have a less sensitive system here

I wouldn't worry about it, just remember to slow down in sharp turns, if I do that I'm fine....if you've ever had the abs kick in in a turn after lifting it will make you gun shy and you will definitely slow down but it's just the fact it can do it un expectantly at times...but in theory if you drive right you'll have no problems...

 

This thread make me second guess getting a lift, i dont want to turn my brand new truck into something that i wouldn't want my wife to drive.

I noticed that fabtech and procomp updated their kits to be "vsc compatible" anyone know what they changed ?

Not that i want a drop bracket, i was looking at icon stage 4, but would be nice to know if they did anything that we could replicate.

 

Came across this thread after nearly shooting off an onramp today. WoW that was no joke. Truck has Bilstein 5100 shocks at 1.75 with stock springs and BFG 265x75x16 Tires.

Seriously not excited with this issue after just going through the rings about the 6spd throwout bearing issue with my dealer.

So happy to make this my first new car purchase and keep running into issues that would not be present on an older truck.

your tires are not huge, you should be able to solve with a VSC calibration

 

Checking back into this thread after a few years and I am disappointed to see there has been no progress from this group, nor from Toyota to address this. I tried the recalibration multiple times with almost no change (suggesting that calibration is the same each time). I would be excited to be able to disable the DSC, but maintain the ABS.

I filled out an NTSB safety report on this years ago, how many of you have also done that? If enough people report this, it seems it should be looked into by Toyota.

BTW, I am on 5100's at 1.75 and a 1.5 AAL. Barely what I would consider a lift. This (VSC) is a driving aid, much like ABS. I think it is a BS argument to say that because a truck is lifted the system acts erratically. That is a poor system. It would be like saying a ABS on a lowered honda can engage while on the freeway, or a rev limiter can engage at 4k RPM because a new muffler was installed.

 

subbed, I will admit I haven't read through all of this yet... but is this a common issue post lift or just some have it and some don't?
