    I don't think I have any pics. LED bars are great and they put out a nice even light, but don't have the same distance as HIDs. A combination of the two would be ideal with some HID's to throw light way out there and the LED bars to fill in and give a lot of spread. I think JBerry is running a setup like that with HIDs on him bumper and curved LED bar above the windshield.

    If you're not in the habit of driving fast in the dirt at night then an LED bar will be a great light. But I tend to move at a rapid rate quite often at night on some of our trips and I find that even with my HIDs I am close to "outrunning" them and wish I had a bit more distance. That problem is worse with an LED bar. Eventually when I grow up and have money I'll probably add an LED bar but I don't think I'll ever get rid of my HIDs, but I might upgrade them.

    Hey. Adam, how much did it cost, roughly, to get the steal and brackets for you skid plates? I'm thinking about building skid plates or ordering BudBuilts. What do you think?

    Well, the STEEL I used was some remnant peices I got at a local yard. They had some 3x3' peices of 3/16 plate and I took 3 of them and I think I paid $100 for all of that. The brackets were from Ruffstuff. http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/XMEMKIT.html
    I paid $48 for that. Then it was just the welding consumables. So all in all, I was into my full set of skids less than $200. That's almost $100 cheaper than just an IFS skid from Budbuilt.

    Looks like if I go the route of building them from the ground up, it looks like I'll be spending 1/3 to 1/4 of what I would for a full set of BudBuilts. Now I'm definitely interested to go this way.

    Adam is dead on. The HID's shoot the light out at farther distances better, but the LED bar floods amazingly. Below are a couple pix, HID on top and LED on bottom. Picture doesn't do it complete justice as the road is uphill, but the HID's do throw light out at farther distances.

    My guess is that those photos aren't completely indicative of the difference in light output between the lights. HID's put out a LOT of light so don't let that photo deceive you. It's hard to get accurate photos of what lights actually do and compare them. But in general its a decent way to look at it. The HIDs being a more focused pattern with the LEDs giving a wide pool of light. Thanks Jason for posting that.

    I will say that my HIDs are brighter than my buddies LED bar.

    Not to take over but I echo all that is said. Not a huge led bar fan. They cost too much and HIDs perform better

    My HIDs are freaking awesome and I won't be replacing them with any led bar on my roof any time soon.

    I will say a smaller bar somewhere up front for a flood light is a great use for an led bar.

    Hey Adam! Old guy here, (going through mid life crisis). I've ben following your threads for a while and man, you have some serious skills dude. I just bought a 2004 Pre-runner & I'm beginning my quest to mod. I'm wanting to lift it & put some 33" Wranglers on it. Should I also do a gear swap or wait & see how the tires affect performance? This subject has probably ben beat to death but I humbly await some input from you.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

    A regear is never a bad idea when going with bigger tires. I don't think it's a requirement (I'm still running stock gears with my 33's) but there is some power loss when running large tires on stock gears. For 33" tires I would recommend 4.88 gears for better road manners. Some will go with 5.29's but I think that's a bit low for a rig that is primarily on road.
