Changed the oil in the truck Saturday morning. It's a 2010 4.0. I run Mobil synthetic and only had about 5500 miles on that oil. Put the same type oil back in it (5w-30) and swapped the filter as usual.
Now I have a new noise under the hood. I'm used to the normal tick. This is a new, almost like a rattle or flutter, but definitely metallic noise.

1st: Yes the plug is on the truck and the oil level is just fine.
2nd: I did have a Bosch filter on the truck, store didn't have one so I bought top level fram filter. I've read now that the cheap fram filter can cause issues, haven't seen anything about the higher quality ones.
3rd: Won't do it in neutral. Only when in gear and either accelerating (normal or heavy) or when the engine is under load like going up a steeper hill. I did notice it on the interstate as well, though it was not constant and was brief.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

I'll try to get a recording tomorrow. Just went for a drive and, of course, couldn't reproduce the sound.

Just read through all of the responses on that and the noise in one of the videos is what mine sounds like. My truck is a 2010 though. Will they do the tsb on it?

I believe I have the same metallic noise. I took mine down to the local dealership and had a technician ride along. He said that the noise is normal.

He took me to the mechanics bay and showed me an opened up engine block. He show me some aluminum lifters with some rollers on them. He said when the lifters move the noise resonates through the aluminum block. The aluminum does not dampen the sound and depending on the weight of the oil used the louder it can get. He suggested using thicker oil. I told him I didn't want to take the 0.01% hit in MPG.

FYI I also have been using M1.

If I hold hold the throttle I can get the engine to make the metallic noise. When I am coasting I can keep tapping then letting off the gas pedal and makes this noise. On hard acceleration I can make this noise. (I did all this with the tech on board).

All normal per Technician and logged in my file.

    Hope that helps

Is your truck and automatic or manual? It kinda sounds like a loose torque converter bolt(s) or flex-plate issue or something the like. I had a chevy do that one time. Metallic knocking when on the gas, but nothing in neutral. Ended up being a couple loose torque converter bolts and a cracked flex-plate. Just a thought, may be nothing to worry about at all on yours. I'd monitor it closely though for a couple days.

does the ticking happen all the time or just at startup. if just at startup it might be the fram filter while the oil heats up. happened to me with a ford ranger. you could swap the filter without loosing much oil. just a thought.

Reece. The truck is an auto. I'll have to check that out. Looked up a few videos of that and the sound does sound like that.
MScoff. I think I'm also going to swap it out today. It's the only thing that changed from my las oil change. But it actually does it more when it warms up.

Turns out it was the oil filter. Swapped it and the sound disappeared on the next drive.

Really?? Well Im glad I descided to read this post. Because Ive had that stupid noise for the longest time. And didn't know that there is a TSB out for spark knock pinging noise.

I hope that's my problem and that my dealer can get rid of it.

What would cause the oil filter to make this noise?

Hmmm...I used purolater and did not have this noise. since i switched back to OEM I have had this noise. Maybe I should switch my filter back to purolator. I can swap it out as long as engine is cool?

So freaky that sounds like my truck

Never heard of something like this but I suppose it is possible for different filters to have slightly different "flow through" characteristics raising or lowering the pressure in the oil pumping system.

I know I have used Phram filters, even the cheaper ones, countless countless times over the last 35 years with no problems. But lately all these guys on here have convinced me the bigger the filtration area really is better, so I have been using the OEMs.

The filter was not making the noise, it was doing/not doing something that cause my motor to make the noise.

I read a couple of other threads on here and on other forums that mentioned that this motor for some reason does not like the cheap Fram filters. They said that it can actually cause a knocking type noise to be able to be heard but no one offered up any definite explanation of why. They said when the Fram filter was taken off, the noise went away nearly immediately in most cases.

This was not a cheap orange Fram filter, it was their ultra synthetic. I guess something about the way Fram makes their filters may cause a restriction of oil flow or pressure change causing the lifters or something to become more audible. The only thing I did to my truck was swap the oil filter when it was cold, and put back in the same amount of oil that I lost changing the filter. The dealership was closed on Sunday when I did this so after looking at several recommendations on here, I got one of the mobil filters to put on as it was the second most recommended behind the OEM.

    Here are some I read.
