When you get out of school and get a decent gig, don't let the girl know what kind of money you make. My wife didn't know about my finances until close to the wedding. I just made it clear that I would not live in debt and if she currently had major debt we wouldn't get married until she took care of it.

At the time of the wedding we had two paid off cars and houses (One was mine and the other was hers). Not saying this is the only way to go, but with all the things that can make life complicated and stressful we decided to eliminate what we had the most control over; money.

 

I dated a fucking **** that demanded I spend a quarter of my annual salary on her ring. She told me she knew what I made since he dad had the same position. I told her that was too much money to spend on something that fit on her finger and the money could be spent in other places to better our lives. Her reply? "If you love me you'd spend everything you can on me". We broke up about 3 weeks later.

Here's my 2 cents. If you have to put yourself in a bind just to make her happy then she's not the one for you. Now she's with a guy that buys her anything he can afford and he's stuck at a job that he hates, but can't leave to pursue what makes him happy because he needs to be able to afford the gifts she wants.

 

I think debt is number one cause of people breaking up/divorce in America

 

This is an uber sore subject for me and I'm ultra passionate about proper finance (I was a financial advisory for a few years before jumping into the oil and gas industry). It's work to keep a happy marriage with factors that you can't control, why add finances to the mix?

 

It is, that and then cheating I think.

 

What took so long? If it were me, it would be a done deal by the end of the day.

 

I'm still a guy and wanted to get some more before I left. Had to grudge fuck her a few times first.

my son's mom wanted a ring. Told her I would get her one. Under one condition! ! Whatever I spend on your ring. You have to spend the same on mine! Lol don't think I paid more than 3 grand on a ring for her. But we never got married so I took it back
