Remember the purpose of airing down is to fold the sidewalls slightly to give you a bigger contact patch. The 285 tire before airing down already gives a bigger contact patch than stock.

That sucks OP but the Trail Grapplers would leave you in the same position you were in. Be better off putting a locker in it. Hope you didnt break anything

Thought he has a locker? Says TRD Off-Road on the bedside. As a base PreRunner owner, I feel the biggest suckers are those that knowingly buy and pay EXTRA for the PreRuner TRD-Off Road pkg. Personally if I'm paying the $2-$3K more for the TRD-Off Road PreRunner, I would rather have a base 4x4 or SR5 4x4.

PreRunner is fine for me, I need only the utility of the box for work. I'm not going to wheel the truck that puts food on the table. If I want to go Off-road or through the snow ,the wifes '13 Subaru Outback will get me to 90% of the places I'd probably get stuck in my PreRunner.

On a side note, OP wheeling with a 2wd is all about momentum, you probably could have got through this with a good run at it. You can't just crawl through sand with 2wd. I could probably get a Chevy Aveo through the same situation with a good run at it lol.

Actually grew up in DE, moved to Bmore 3 years ago for a job. I still come to the surf to fish. I wish I could go to Rausch, never been but want to go. I am actually busy that weekend but next trip, let me know. I go out to western PA with a bunch of friends from work who all have FJ's and play on old fire roads on state land near Rockton. I haven't taken this truck yet, just got it but we have a trip planned to go middle of October.

It should read when there is the possibility of getting stuck. That is how I use it. Just like 4x4. In the old days I locked my hubs and was ready long before I hit the mud ot sand.

exactly its a CYOA policy employed a just in case something breaks while ur using it. i lock all the time off pavement if i think i may need it, hunting, fishing, checkin pastures and fields, and what little lagit off roading i do was locked for about 6 hours straight.

Speed is your friend in sand. Not saying you need to go balls to the wall, but if you're only 2wd, don't attempt to crawl your way through deep sand. Steady gas delivery. Once you are trapped though, stop hitting the gas. That's just going to dig you deeper.

If you plan on continuing to tackle sandy areas with your truck, I recommend some of those traction devices and a shovel. Dig out around tire, shove it in there, and your tires will have something to grip.

Nice truck. I use to never air down, until a guy here recently caught his truck on fire by not airing down and overworking his transmission.

Sorry for the late reply. Yeah it was 2am and I had a few beers in me. Our sand is a real bitch around my area (central SC) I engaged the locking diff, but as someone said above..you have to go a little and hear a click before it even engages. I gave that truck hell that night, back and forth. I was so pissed, and definitely wished this truck was 4wd! but oh well, had to get the big farm tractor out to yank me out. I dug a HUGE TRENCH from trying to get out.

I did that once with my old Xtracab. I was out in sugar sand down Race Point in Provincetown (Cape Cod) and my well-meaning, but not mechanically inclined friend tried to help me by locking my front hubs for me. Turns out he didn't lock one of the sides so I was out in the sand in 2WD. I was on 31x10.5 BFG ATs aired down to 11psi and I put the bumper on the sand.

I had a nice couple in a bone stock F-150 yank me out. I locked the hubs and went on with my business. I was doing fine until I started to slow down and bog as was mentioned earlier.

4WD is like carrying a pistol- you dont need it much, but when you do, you really need it.
