For a week or so I've noticed a very slight rattle either when I'm accelerating from a stop, or in a high gear right before the transmission downshifts. This isn't the Tacoma rattle everybody talks about that can be helped with rubber washers or something....this is different.

My sister has an infinity that would run low on oil and then the whole top end would rattle (I always assumed it was oil starved lifters)....the sound I'm hearing in my Tacoma is EXACTLY the same except it only lasts for a split second, and I'm probably the only one I know who would even hear it.

Thoughts? Im not inclined to take it to a mechanic, I'm sure they would test drive it and tell me it sounds fine there's no issues. However, I know I'm hearing something that I didn't hear before. Any thoughts?

I used 5w30 on the last oil change, I was due for another change this week, and changed to 0w30. 5k interval, oem oil filter.

So is this just a normal engine sound? My power stroke 7.3 used to make some pretty strange sounds that were all considered normal...but when I hear a sound I think is wierd I like to investigate it.

Per 1 Toyota Technician he called it normal. Is it normal in all Tacomas? Normal enough they released a TSB for 2012+.

I personally hate the noise. Never driven a vehicle were it was okay to had this type of problem. Tacoma owners are very loyal to the brand.

Rather be known for a signature exhaust than a signature knock/ping/vibration!

I just hit the gas peddle and try not to listen to the noises. Well..., unless I see black or blue smokes coming out of the engine compartment ;) !

Well, after looking at the thread nrxtm posted and poking around YouTube, the sounds y'all are talking about are the same ones my truck is making.

Super annoying. Never had a vehicle where sounds like this were ok. I'm going to run a tank of premium gas and see if that changes anything....also I swear it's louder with the 0w30 oil than it was with the 5w30 so I may switch back as well.

Toyota tech said put in heavier weight oil. But why would oil cause pinging?

    Softtopper, wet okole,
There is a TSB for this. Search for T-SB-0044-14. I had this done about a month ago and it made my truck run so much better. It was night and day difference.

I have put about 50 miles on Costco Premium and I have not been able to duplicate the noise now. Will keep my ears open.

I wish I could apply the TSB.

I hope Toyota can come up with a reflash for the ECM for you pre-2012 guys. I created the 2012+ ECM reprogram thread here shortly after finding the TSB posted on this website. As you can see, most guys are having good results so far. My truck just had its' TSB performed, but I still have premium in my tank. Time will tell.
