    I know, very specific....

I got the shell yesterday and am trying to figure out ways I can store my mtnbike in the back, i mean other than the obvious (take front wheel off and throw it in, or throw racks up top).

Before the shell I had a Rocky Mount attached to the rails near the cab, where the bike fork would attach. The reason I mention 29inch mtn-bike (wheel size) specifically is even with that mount I had to move the back wheel diagonally a bit for it to fit with the tailgate up. It couldn't fit straight in.

Just seeing if someone here did something creative with their DCSB/Shell/29er set-up.

    Thanks

Im in the same boat... I just put on the shell used the same rocky mounts rail mount, but I have a 26in bike and my wheel would still touch the tailgate. I don't think mounting the rocky mount to a piece of wood and putting the bike in rear end first would work either but haven't had time to check. Planning to get a rack for the roof myself so I can have the shell loaded w/ camp gear and still bring the bikes. I am interested to see what others have done as well.

Sorry that wasn't helpful at all...

Will the gate close if your front fork was mounted lower on the front of the bed and the rear wheel raised up towards the ceiling of the cap?

    ...just a thought.

There have been a few days where i have thought "doh! Should've gotten the long bed"

With the rockymount bolted to a 2x4 as far as possible in the front of the bed the tailgate should close, I have my rocky mount attached to my sliding bed divider and my tailgate closes with my 29'r

Yea I have a short box I actually mounted them to the back rail the first time a couldn't close the tailgate. I wasn't smart enough to turn the back of the bike tho. So I spent more time putting them in the same place as the hitches I had before the delta lockable hitch. I prob will now mount to the back bed rail and angle the back of the bike lol.
Thanks I'll throw up a pic here soon

Access cab here and 26'er but you could try this setup. If the bike won't fit straight just angle the rear towards a corner.

Hmmm, that actually looks pretty good. Even with the 29er i think it would still fit and have the tailgate shut. Is that a Rocky Mount Clutch you bolted into the 2x4?

EDIT: I missed the AC part (long bed). Yea, the bike would definitely need to be angled, and even then may not fit. Still looks good though

My mounts are some generic brand. Have you tried removing the front wheel and putting the bike in the bed to see if it fits with the gate up and topper closed? I imagine it would be close with the rear wheel angled to a corner. Keep the bars and fork straight.

You would think that would be the obvious first thing I would do, but no haven't done that yet. Heh. I am afraid though whatever solution I come up with will essentially turn into a 1-bike only fit because of the angle. I'll need to experiment with it.

Good luck. I can fit 2 bikes (long bed) and just remove the board with the mounts if I want to use the bed for something else. Having the mounts in the rear make it easier to hook the bikes up because you don't have to crawl into the bed to get to the mounts.

totally specific question, but it describes my situation. dcsb really doesn't give us much room for a 29er, especially if you have a huge frame. i have a 19" trek superfly and it barely fits without the front wheel. can't even imagine how a 23" frame would fit.
i have to twist it in with the rear wheel going in toward the cab. i have 30" handlebars so they are difficult to maneuver. basically one side is on the bed and the other one i have to wrap in a towel so it doesn't break my glass door.
can't mount it on the top because i have a lift and the bike would sit too high...would probably take out traffic lights because it's so damn big.
if i ride with others, i use the yakima swing daddy hitch rack.

there really isn't a good option if you have a shell and a huge bike.
best of luck to you, hope you figure something that works.

Ok, I got off my ass and took some pictures. 1st picture is straight in (not even close to fitting, you can see the grips outside the shell.) 2nd pic is angled, that actually looks like it will fit fine with the 2x4 method, but again limits me to 1 bike. Not the end of the world, maybe i can have the mount as far over as I possibly can, and still get another bike/mount in on the other side of the 2x4. Two 29ers would never work though I am guessing.

Sorry Ryan, I thought you had a shell. That setup is nice, but won't work for me unfortunately. What size frame is that? My Trek 19in rubbed the tailgate and couldn't fit flush straight in when I used your set-up (pre-shell), had to be angled.

I have a 17.5 frame I figured with the 2x4 in the bottom of the bed it may fit just sliding the bike in and out on it. With the small gap I have between the tire and tail gate I could see the frame making a difference
