I was just wondering what would cause my steering wheel to wobble a little bit when I'm driving on the interstate at over 65mph. Anything less than that and it is smooth and no other vibrations anywhere else. Is there anything else I should look for besides the tires not being balanced?
Truck is a 2002 prerunner with 180k miles. The front end has been basically rebuilt at around 158k.

    Well:

    1. Start with a check of the tires.
    a. uneven wear
    b. out of balance
    c. a belt in the tire may have shifted

    2. Worn steering components
    a. all tie-rod ends
    b. ball joints
    c. Shocks
    d. any play in any component

    3. Anything bent, twisted, or loose

    4. Any sign of anything foreign
    a. I once saw, mud and dirt wedged around the brake rotor, cause this problem

These are the first places to look at. Good luck on your quest.

My truck does the same things but then sometimes on the highway its rock solid. When I put new shocks on the steering was solid, so I thought it had it fixed but then it started to wobble again.

Everything on my front end was new at 158k. I've checked tire play by jacking up front end and everything seems tight.

I will, I was just wondering what other possibilities it could be. I'm getting my tires rebalanced on Saturday so I will check the LBJ's.

Since it only occurs at higher speeds, tires are the primary suspect. After rebalancing, rotate the rear tires to the front.

I am thinking tires also but was wondering if anything in the driveshaft would cause this. For example could it be a bad center bearing on the driveshaft?

Bad carrier bearing would vibrate in other ways but shouldn't cause steering wheel wobble. And you can check carrier bearing play by crawling under the truck and pulling on the driveshaft side-to-side.

I get some steering wheel wobble above 80 mph, but it's with snow tires (Firestone Winterforce UV) which are manufactured poorly.

I had this and balanced my tires at 3 different discount tires and couldnt figure it out. (I have new tie rods lbj and all that) but when I took it to a different tire shop for an alignment they told me the tires werent balanced and after they fixed it I didnt have the wobbles. Not sure if that helps you but they just never seem to balance mine right

mine does this sometimes. I have heard that if you have aftermarket lugs, so not stock ones, they may play a part in the way the tire is balanced?? but i would have to agree with above.

Well I am using gorilla lugs that are the ones with the extra thread length. You may be in to something.

i know that when i got my new wheels on the TRD lug nuts were to big for the holes in the wheel. so they ordered new ones to fit. and i was talking to a guy that i work with that said he had the same problem so he ordered TRD ones from toyota to fit, and his problem had gone away?

Are you running aluminum or steel wheels? If you are running aluminum what kind of lug nuts are you using? Are you getting plenty of thread contact with them?
