Wonder why they put the exact same transmission in a Cadillac?

It's a truck transmission, not a car transmission. It's not going to be as quick or smooth. That being said after a couple thousand miles it got a bit easier either because it broke in or I got used to it a bit more. I'm definitely going to change the fluid early.

Beats the hell out of me. Have you ever driven a CTS with the AY6/RA60? I haven't. It may suck ass. It may be why they have a Tremec 6060 in the CTS now? Dunno.

First post here. I just bought a '14 Tacoma off-road, 6speed. My first one, it replaced an ancient Ford. I have about 1400 mi on clock by now. The transmission is getting smoother. Initially I got lots of gear "clunks" and drivetrain backlash. Some of it was the newness of the vehicle, the rest was me getting accustomed to it.

Other vehicle is a VW GTI, 6-speed manual. The GTI shifts and drives like a sports car; the Tacoma is like, well..., a truck. The difference is like night and day. Smooth shifts in the Tacoma took a while for me to achieve, but it is possible. Take it easy with firm deliberate shifts while using the gas to aim at the RPMs of your next gear. It's all about adaptation to the vehicle's characteristics. Getting back in the GTI with its light clutch and short-throw, precise shifter means I mash the clutch to the floor and try to ram my hand through the dash until I get back in the groove. Like I said, it's about adaptation. I don't expect the Tacoma to behave like a sports car. Likewise, the GTI will never go offroad. They are different critters.

Yup. Pretty much. I've definitely loosened up on the sports shifting but as I live in an urban environment there are of course those intersections and merges that call for aggressive shifting. I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that the taco is a truck...though apparently not while taking sharp turns at highway on ramps.

Is their any solution to this that you know of? I have a 2005 6spd and have the same issue as the rest of them it seems

It was also used in the Camaro and in some of the Lexus line. Guess I'm saying it's not all that bad a unit I have zero issues with mine but then I have been driving manual transmissions for 52 years from any thing from a 3 spd on the tree to a Mack triplex.

Your GTi is front wheel drive it is totally different set up the gears are smaller, lighter and will not handle some thing close to 400# of torque. You are right you do get better with practice and after awhile you will find that the gear box isn't so bad after all.

Right, maineah! I had a '69 GTO back in the day. In my distant memory, that one behaved a lot like the Tacoma, only more so. A 400 cubic inch big block and a 4-speed. Nearly impossible to stall it. Likewise, it was nearly impossible to keep the tires hooked up. :D Quite unlike the GTI. . . .

Meh. Unless it's a safety issue, i.e. a merge, 'eff 'em. They can wait while my truck gets driven like a truck.

Here's some interesting, albeit a few years old, information from a Camaro forum.

    http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56499

Sounds like they have issues with 1-2 shifts in the AY6, as well as syncro and clutch problems.

Here's some interesting info on the derivatives of the RA6x/AY6 series used in other makes and Toyota vehicles:

    http://kaizenfactor.wordpress.com/2...z-fr-s-gt-86-manual-transmission-or-is-scion/

It's an interesting transmission family, but I don't think it was ever meant (as in the RA60 specifically) to be driven like anything other than a truck transmission. I spent enough years fighting the light and medium duty Tremec units AMC put in their vehicles to not worry about it and just treat it like an old, slow transmission.

I have the auto (after driving stick all my life) what gets me is, the auto transmission acts the same, "bumpy" shifts especially in 5th gear under low throttle...maybe it isn't the transmission after all but some slack in the drivetrain??

Bought the truck I test drove (2007 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab V6, 4WD, 6 speed manual) and startin' to get the hang of it. Go to 3000 RPM and it shifts easily enough or you can double clutch it (definite grampa technique) or after a few hours getting the RPM's matched to the gear speed and can almost shift with clutch not fully depressed.

Think that will get easier with familiarity. Gearbox feels liek it is a shorter throw. Sorta subjective I guess. Rest of the time...I am always stopping or hesitating in neutral before shifting...habit from long time back ;)

Something I remember reading about how the computer holds the rpms up even with your foot off the throttle...that's different than my 2004 Tacoma throttle.

in my 2010 MX-5; if I release the gas; it's the same as stomping on the breaks. In the Taco; it's much gentler. I wouldn't be surprised at all if you were right (might be the trucks 3x weight simply holds momentum better; but still..)

I recently bought an 09' with 60k miles. I changed to redline and it did seem better. My problem comes at 5th and 6th gear. Hard for me to transition smoothly in those two gears. Either way I love a manual transmission!

I think its unfair comparing the tacoma 6sp to a GTI or Miata. I mean that's like apples to asses.

Not for long. Just scored a B&M short shifter for the taco. I'm positive this will allow me to rally through turns :)
