Well OP, too bad you had such a bad experience up front. We've all had a situation where we harshly judged something based on an early impression.

Best of luck to you with the Xterra and I hope it fits your needs well. I have nothing bad to say at all except that I'm a bit sad you didn't have a chance to really enjoy what a Tacoma is capable of and that they really are excellent trucks for what they are. Mine has brought me the happiest driving experiences of my life. But, I was happy with my old Nissan back in the day.

You're actually sad someone traded in a Tacoma?

Well, not literally. But, I wish more people enjoyed theirs as much as I have. Many do, but some don't give these trucks the chance.

I ran over an Xterra full of kittens on my way home. But, sure the Xterra is every bit of capable off road.

I love mine also, 99% of the time. But it's a vehicle. It needs to be reliable, efficient, and effective for my needs and uses. If it isn't, especially when it's new, then that's an expensive problem that doesn't require very much patience.

You're as smart as you seem! Maybe you should go polish your Tacoma emblems.

Your world must be incredibly small if you think the Tacoma is any better than the Xterra you keep fapping about.

Gosh, I had it all wrong then. I was hoping to invest $30k into something NOT reliable or that WOULDN'T fit my needs. I like wasting money from the get-go, too.

    Thanks, Cap'n.

Please, list the specs in comparison format. I'm not a doubter, I just like to see facts and evidence on people's claims.

One's an SUV and the other is a mid-size pickup truck. Already they're apples and oranges. But proceed...

You think it makes sense to keep a problem vehicle because someone else loves theirs? OP spent money on a crappy new Tacoma that he thought wasn't crappy. Dealer couldn't fix it, Toyota couldn't fix it, so he sold it.

What's your problem with that again?

I'm not the guy saying how a Tacoma is untouchable and an Xterra can't go anywhere a Tacoma can offroad, so I have no reason to compare anything. To think that is idiotic at best, and if he wants to make a graph and pie chart then we can all look at it. Otherwise I'll take the safe road of he's an ignorant fanboy and move on assuming he will have no tangible reality that I can relate to.

No polishing as they get dirty most weekends. I'm not sure why these arguments always get so hostile, is it because we are behind the computer screen? I would certainly argue that the Tacoma is superior in an off road setting. I know the Tacoma isn't the ultimate off-road machine. That isn't the argument here.

    Here are the specs:
    http://www.toyota.com/tacoma/features.html#!/packages/7554/7594
    http://www.nissanusa.com/suvs/xterra/versions-specs

Other than that, I've seen first hand both vehicles in multiple off road situations. And, in my experience they get left behind.

    Some stuff...
Same, I was literally in and out of Miller Toyota in Manassas, VA in less than an hour the day my rig arrived on the truck from San Antonio. Of course I ordered my rig through the Costco vehicle program and had it built to spec working with Miller.

OP - You should have tried a different dealer in the DMV. Enjoy the Nissan though, I had a few Hard-body pickups back in the early to mid 1990s when I was on AD in the Corps with no complaints. :D

As have I, and they're not in agreement with your experiences. Yet I'm not posting about Xterra's full of kittens getting ran over. no hostility here, either. I don't have a dollar on the line in someone else's spending, or think of my truck as anything other than a truck, no better than the next one.

The kittens thing was joke. (Or was it?) You win. This is exhausting and I don't have enough time in the evening.

Strictly to get the facts out there, I read those. Here is what I found. Again, I do not off road much, so if I missed something, feel free to point it out.

Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 vs Xterra Pro-4 X. Both have locking rear diffs, whatever else is expected stock in an "Off Road" vehicle. As far as specs:

    Ground Clearance: Xterra - 9.5", Tacoma - 9.3"
    Wheelbase: Xterra - 106", Tacoma - 127"
    Track Width: Xterra - 62", Tacoma - 63"
    Approach Angle: Xterra - 33.2, Tacoma - 35
    Break-Over Angle: Xterra - 23.8, Tacoma - 21
    Departure Angle: Xterra - 29.4, Tacoma - 26
    Engine HP/TQ: Xterra - 261/281, Tacoma - 236/266
    Curb Weight: Xterra - 4429, Tacoma - 4220

They look pretty equal to me. The Xterra is slightly better in some areas, the Tacoma is slightly better in others. I would say both would be great vehicles for a stock, capable camping and trail rig.

90% of off road driving is driver skill. I had an Dodge 4x4, and was out wheeled by an old guy in a VW thing........2 WHEEL DRIVE!

Bottom line is, Its the OP's money, and he can buy what he wants.
