Lube your driveshaft!!!!!

I have been battling a thumping noise in my 01 Tacoma when I come to a sudden stop or accelerate after braking. After some research and a timely post by jwscoot I have found the cause of the problem. The rear adjustable driveline has a grease zerk just for this purpose. Went to autozone to but a grease gun and synth grease at 10:00 tonight. Lubed the entire driveline and so far so good. Pass it around. What an easy fix to an extremely irritating problem. PS. The rear drive shaft to over 40 pumps of grease to start to show some movement. Thanks for yalls advice.

 

can you post some pics on your repair? I have had the same problem in my 98 truck for years and no one seems to have figured it out.. I would not know what to lube back there.

I too wanted to Lube my driveshaft (09, V6, AT, DC, SWB) BUT, I could not find any zert fittings or any way to lube them?

Should it be lubed? (or can it?).

theres 5 grease zerks on the 05+ driveshafts

 

Are you referring to the slip yoke?
If Yes....they need lubricated on the 1st gen trucks. However, too much grease can also cause problems (lack of it being able to 'slip').

I'm not sure the 2nd gen trucks have a slip yoke lube point. The slip joint is covered up by a rubber boot and I haven't heard anyone who's actually found one yet. The grease zerk for the 1st gen trucks is behind the 'ear' on the driveshaft and the 2nd gens don't have one there.

I looked and felt and I could not find any on my 09, Pre-Runner, V-6, AT swb, Tacoma.
I would love to lube something......

I was under my "09" Access cab the other day and noticed that there were grease fittings on the (universal joints) drive shaft, I didn't notice any others, but will look the next time. now I am wondering just when they should be greased, Den

 

I also had/am having a similar problem with an '01 tacoma 4wd double cab. I took it to Toyota and they said it was this grease issue. When they returned the truck, it was better but it did not last. I love this truck but this knocking sound/feel is really annoying! Anyone else have this problem or does anyone have any other advice? My understanding is that you can do damage to some bearing assemblies by over-greasing.

 

there is only grease zerks on the 4x4s not prerunners.

Only 4x4's will have the Zerk fittings, not 2x4's. Kind of wish they would have came with them.

You could take the connecting joints apart and lube. But I wouldn't worry about it, just drive.

I have a 2001 Tacoma Prerunner 4X2 and have dealt with the "driveshaft "clunk" for quite a while. It happens when I stop quickly at a traffic light and then when I take my foot off the brake...whamo! The first time it happened I thought someone had rearended me! My Prerunner does have 4 zerk fittings on the driveshaft and if they are greased properly, the clunk doesn't happen as often or as bad. When looking for a solution to this problem, I have found a lot of Tacoma owners are having this same problem for most all years of vehicles starting around 1999. Some have installed helper springs or traction bars to help with the softer rear springs - axle wrap...some have taken the driveshaft apart and sanded the splines and regreased and it helped...some have used really expensive DuPont Krytox GPL226 Grease and it helped...some have cut pieces of rubber and inserted at the rear of the transmission to stop some of the flexing...and the list goes on and on! You would have thought Toyota would have came up with a solution by now but I guess it would cost too much. I have found a this for Tundra's and Sequoia's...google T-SB-0067-09...so they have found a solution to the problem...but not for Tacoma's. I guess if we continue to buy and drive and buy the Tacoma's...we will need to pass along any information we can come up with that will minimize the "driveshaft clunk".

 

Mobil synth greas is Red, old goo is usually black. So as you pumping red grease in the U-joint , old blackened grease comes out

Most of people use Mobil grease for u-joints, Toyota calls for lithium some crap grease that you should use on door locks only
