Just to lend a helping hand here...check out this thread. There is a TSB that has solved the pinging noise for many of us Tacoma owners. I am 1/2 way through my first tank of 87 unleaded fuel since the TSB has been performed. The truck is running great. The thread I linked below is meant to help us keep track of these trucks post-TSB. :)

I have an 07 Trd sport and had problems and to be honest I had to battle them on everything and thanks to this forum and bringing them to court I won every issue but if they don't change their ways in the next 3 years I will be buying a nissan instead of a tacoma. I'm not going through all that crap again

Weights come on the outside from the factory.

Any clip weights use a metal clip to hold them in place and there will be noticeable marks where they were removed.

The problem is with toyota for choosing this as a option. It is done since it is faster than stick weights. There is a positive benefit to them as well since the weight is on the farthest edge which is better for balancing purposes.

Your noise is likely another issue and not the wheels or tires if you just had them rebalanced and are having the same concern.

I was thinking about switching back to regular for 1 tank to see if it happens again. The weights should not have been put on the exterior of the rim as it damages the wheel and clear coat. We will see.

I have been following that thread with great interest. This was brought up to the local dealership and they were not aware of it. At the time I did not want to push it since it is still a new TSB.

Its a shame that a corporation like Toyota touts they care about customer service, yet lacks in it. Its a numbers game. If they decline service, they save money. The end the years it turns up in greater earning at the cost to consumers.

What we know so far. Southeast Toyota appears to have installed the rims on the vehicle. It comes into the port in Jacksonville and they modify what the dealership orders from them. So the faulty workmanship on the rims appears to be from Southeast Toyota.

We are requesting a quote for the rims, tires mounted, and balanced. The rest of the items will be addressed as needed. Once we have a correct estimate on the replacement parts and labor we will now have a number or a dollar amount for damages. Since this appears to be a breach of warranty claim so far we will work on gathering necessary paperwork.

Update: No resolve yet on any of the concerns presented. It appears at this time the primary obstacle to a solution is Southeast Toyota. We have been in contact with our local dealer who has been very difficult to deal with and not very helpful. I will share some of the correspondence when I get a chance.

Lastly, we are not going through the arbitration, or dispute resolution process as from what we understand its not very helpful. We will give them a week and file a letter of intent to sue.

Dude all tacoma wheels come with a weight on the outside. ... go check out some lots and take a look. This is a dealership issue, not a toyota issue.

As mentioned before the wheels were put on by Southeast Toyota. When you place weights on the external lip you create a problem especially with aluminum rims. There was a balancing issue. The weights were moved due to that problem. We now have rims with clear coat damage from the weights, as well as gouges.

Everyone is in agreement that the weights should have been installed in areas other than the outer lip of the rim on the aluminum rims. The only entity not in agreement is Southeast Toyota as they apparently installed the rims.

Guess you should never have made them remove the weights to try to fix a noise that was unrelated.

Really, suing for damage to clear coat that can be fixed? Have you asked them to fix the clear coat?

Thats funny because every tacoma on the lot here in socal as weights on the outer edge of the wheel.

But the wheels should not have been damaged while they removed them. The dealership should repair the damage that they caused.

They have denied doing any repairs to the rims. It was part of a troubleshoot for the balancing issue. The weights appeared to be loose, and the rotation and balance was necessary. The weights that caused the most damage were about 3 inches long, and the clip was small. I have never seen a wheel weight that big on a rim. Nevertheless, it should not be installed on the outer lip since it will damage it.

So you are fine with spending money on nice new rims and placing large, lead weights on the outside of them? I think its poor workmanship. What it tells me is that someone wants to save money, is in a rush, and doesn't care.

If I spent $1500.00 on new rims would you install the rims with the weights on the outside of the lip?

I am a carpenter by trade. It would be the equivalent of me installing trim on your home with 16D framing nails.

Doesn't matter. You bought the truck that was built that way they all are. It would be like me suing you because you used wood to build my home.

The problem here is that the dealership scratched your wheels. They need to fix them, not toyota. There is no reason to scratch wheels when removing the weights except when wanting to be lazy and careless. Only thing toyota may do is put pressure on the dealer to make it right.

It sucks man, I completely agree that you should be made whole, but by the dealership. Here in cali there is a autoshop complaint system, I forget what its called but you might have the same.

Just because they are produced in mass quantities does mean that the product delivered is correct. You could be doing something incorrect for a long period of time before a problem is identified.

The dealership did not cause the problem. The dealership became part of a problem that has been identified and needs to be corrected. Whether the placement of the weights on the wheels caused the gouges and cuts through the clearcoat, or the removal of them is insignificant. The damage is done and needs to be addressed.

What we know. I have been a loyal Toyota customer for 30 years. We identified a concern and requested a reasonable solution. The dealership and Toyotas response was to do nothing. So what we are left with at this time is Toyota wants a 30 year loyal customer to fight them instead of providing a reasonable solution. Seems pretty unreasonable to us.

Thanks for the feedback, and I appreciate all the input.

Thanks guys! I will post some pics as soon as I get a chance. I also have correspondence between the local dealer so you can see how poor customer service gets. I will try to get those up. Its tough this time of year with coaching football and work. Free time doesn't exist.
