Replacing springs.

I'm thinking of buying some Pro Comp leaf springs to replace my old ones on my '96 Tacoma because they're sagging and noisey. How is the quality of Pro Comp and do you recommend them? What else do I need to purchase besides the springs? Thank you for all of your help.

 

Haven't heard much about the ProComp leafs, But If your just replacing stock leafs, with no lift. then I would recommend getting wheelers leafs. They are well recommend here.

you might wanna replace your shocks instead of your springs. Springs never really wear out if your suspension is sagging its most likely your shocks going out

 

nah...trust me.....the stock springs suck!! they flatten out big time over a small period of time.

 

Ya, the springs weaken and eventually snap in half, ask me how I know....

 

I'll take a look at the Wheelers. You're right Taco23. I'm not looking for lift, just replacement. I'll probably take your advice Eric and purchase some new shocks also. Any recommendations on shocks? Please keep in mind that I'm not a hardcore off-roader. I only take it off road during hunting season. So that may help to narrow suggestions as far as shocks go. Thanks once again.

 

I Second that on springs, they are a finite life. I have 160k miles on mine and they are shot. I carried a lot of crap in the back over time and have consistantly relpaced shocks as they wore out. Shock contorl the wheel recovery where shocks hold it truck up and support the weight. I really like the Old Man Emu leaf packs. I have them and really think they are worth the money

 

For shocks, I recommend the Bilstein 5100's. I love mine! they ride nice

My leafs are still stock, but still look in descent condition, there starten to flatten out a little though, bc of my 1" block probably. But I was lucky that the previous owner was a chick and didnt carry anything heavy in the bed.

 

wheelers has a set of stock height springs........nice springs...made by alcan. i'd go with those before i went with a set of pro-comps. and as for shocks.....i'd go with bilsteins on all 4 corners.

 

It looks like I may get the Wheelers. If I decide to go with the 5-leaf (which provides 1.5" of lift) will it make any difference that I have stock shocks? This is my first time attempt at changing springs. Is there anything else that I need to buy to install the new springs?

 

New shackle bolts possibly. New U bolts.

I replaced my springs and have 3" lift and had to put longer shocks on, had no choice. I used Skyjackers though. But Bilstiens are the best.

 

this is what i have, and although i went with bilstein 5100's in the rear also, stock springs will work....but the 5100's ride alot better.

 

x2........if i had to do it all again...i woulda gotten new main eye bolts........cause i had to cut my damn springs off....they were all kinds of seized up.

 

I ordered the Wheelers 5 leaf with new main eye bolts and u-bolts. Should be here by next Wednesday. Called about the Bilstein's but they were out of stock.

 

just to let you know....those springs will give you a little lift in the rear.....so if you want it pretty level,the ome 881 coils work nicely. i have them, and am very happy with the setup.

 

Asked the guy at Wheelers if I should go with 4 or 5 leaf pack. I told him that I had a shell and recommended the 5 leaf. Should tame some of the lift?

 

ah...didnt realize you had a shell. she'll sit pretty level then.

 

Just about ready to order Bilsteins for the rear. The front shocks seem to be just fine. Not quite sure if I should order the front ones also. Will I have issues with the new shocks and the factory ones up front? I really appreciate all of your help.

 

i would go with new shocks all around...ride will be so much better. you can get the bilstein 5100's from downsouth motorsports,a vendor here,for a good price...awesome customer service. wheelers has some nice ome shocks if you'd rather have those.

 

It seems after a little research, I can't put 5100's on my truck. Only Tacoma's from '04 on up can use the 5100's. I'm getting conflicting info on this. I've been told I can only use the 4600's. This info was from Bilstein. One of Bilstein's distributors says that I can use 5100's. I'm starting to get a headache! lol
