Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum because I'm looking at purchasing a Tacoma. I posted this is tech chat previously, but I don't think it's really a tech question. I'm looking to buy a used Tacoma, 2012 or 2011 SR5 because TRD models are rare and heavily marked up around here, so I'm wondering how well the auto-lsd in the SR5 package trucks works.

I've been able to get around off road with an open diff Ranger for years, but I really want the ability to hang a 180 on a fire road, that really sucks not being able to do that with an open rear diff. Will the auto-lsd allow you to drift like a mechanical LSD or does it end the fun like VSC does? I used to have a 4 Runner, I got sick of peg leg burnouts pretty fast so I put a Detroit trutrac in the rear and I could literally spin that thing around on a dime and do donuts all day. (P.S. I have read much of the hundreds of pages on the traction systems on this forum but I haven't found anyone stating how it actually performs in a drift. ) Anyone have any insight on this?

*Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about*

I notice quite the difference between doing donuts with the auto lsd on vs just the stock thing.

The auto lsd is way better for doing donuts.

The systems can be completely turned off to really get wheel spin going for doing donuts or burnouts etc.

Do you mean auto-lsd on vs. just the TRAC system in an SR5 or do you have a TRD Sport with the clutch pack LSD?

No more clutch pack LSDs after 2008.

Auto-LSD is brake-based. You engage it by pressing the VSC off button once.

Yes, I know I'd be stuck with the brake based LSD if I bought a 2009+ SR5. My question was do I need to buy a TRD Sport to get a truck that does what I want?

No more clutch pack LSDs after 2008 in any trim level. SR5, TRD Sport and TRD Off Road all get the brake-based LSD.

Hmm, I wonder if it is different in Canada. I was looking at a 2010 TRD Sport and the dealer said it had a real LSD. I jacked up the back wheels and they did not spin in opposite directions when I turned them like you would expect with an open differential, was it an option?

I have VSC on my Rav4 and I have to hand it to them, as a safety feature it's pretty incredible. Situations in the snow that should result in you doing a 720 just end up causing you to almost come to a stop without even altering your direction of travel. Makes hand brake turns impossible however :(

And I sure hope you realize that "drifting and donuts" are reckless. If this guy has a need to ask about how to do them on this site he has no business influencing others to do the same.
He can go out and learn firsthand

Dealer was most likely mistaken. Did you see an LSD sticker on the axle pumpkin?

Did you even read my post? I'm well versed in how to do them. If you would like to point me to the Tacoma site where off-roaders are welcome I'll be happy to check it out.

Heh, this is Canada, there was barely metal left on the axle pumpkin. I imagine any stickers fell off the week it left the lot. The frame on that truck was scary. I suppose it could have had an aftermarket diff installed. I'll have to check the next one I find to see what it does.

    This indicates a true LSD.

This ( spinning in the same direction when one is turned ) indicates a true LSD.

Yes, it's possible the prev owner did a swap with '08 or earlier diff.

The stickers are surprisingly durable. :D They serve a purpose - let the owner know to squeeze in a tube of friction modifier during diff oil replacement.

I have a 2009 5 speed base 2wd with the Auto LSD thing too. I am confused as well. Is it easier to drift with the Auto LSD button on or off?

I am at work now. I was planning on bringing my manual with me, but forgot.....
