    Only problem is, it sounds like it should only be used for trailered rigs. I don't know if that's a CYA statement, or the axel really conducive for highway travel. Hmmm. I like having the ability to drive my rig to where I wheel.

    Plus from what this article says, the portal gear boxes are a 1.5 ratio, so if you have 4.10's in your diff, the final output is 6.15. Awesome for big 40+ tires, but not really for daily driving I suppose

    Im talking about when my rig is a trailer queen. Unimogs daily drive though. Seems feasible. When I have enough to consider a solid axle my line of thinking goes 'why would I get anything BUT these?!'

    If youre gonna do it, do it right the first time.

    Your going to be stupid tall on portals. Take wyatts truck and add 3 to 4 inchs in height.

    I generally don't care for portal axles as many elements of the design are less durable and require more maintenance than standard solid axles. Plus the cost.

    The additional clearance is not worth the tradeoffs elsewhere in my opinion.

    Taller tires are still an option with portals, since when did people start arguing that our trucks can look 'too tall' haha. That ground clearance is equal to 7" of tire height. So you can run a 35 and have the clearance of a 42" tire. That to me seems like a huge bonus. Nothing about portals is cheap, I'll give you that. But its the same reason I only run royal purple fluids, my baby gets the best. I'll just save a bit longer to get it. Mechanically I havent seen a downside to them. I love performing maintenance on my truck, theres something terribly gratifying about greasing a zerk, or checking tension on bolts and KNOWING she's not gonna come apart by something you've neglected.

    I think installing the tires would be a better use for them than "throwing" them. Tires are heavy. And expensive.

    There is more to running big tires then just clearence. Big tires cut down the angles making it easier for a big tire to climb ledges and other obstacles. Would rather run 40in tires on normal axles and be at 24in frame to ground

    Frame to ground distance doesn't change with portals :notsure:

    Or am I misunderstanding you?
