EGR Slimline Window Visors (in-channel)

Yet another noob here guys. Glad to be here. Great site. Looking forward to taking advantage of all the useful info, and hopefully contributing some as well.

Very nice review! Exactly what I was looking for (i.e. real-world opinions and pics).

I am the proud new owner of a 2009 Double Cab Sport, bright white. I love the look of the in-channel model, and actually wondered exactly how they worked until I read this review. As with most things that have many positives, there are usually some negatives......in this case, the possibility of scratching the glass over time, and the possiblility of losing one while in transit. I had an idea on how to reduce the likelihood of scratching the glass. What if you got some very thin felt-type material and lined the insides of the channels? You guys think this would work? Regarding the acual functionality debate, I personally think they are functional in that you can leave your windows cracked on a hot day, and should a storm blow up (as they do here in GA), rain doesn't get inside. Plus, the aesthetics alone make it worth it for me personally. Also, what about those of us who want (or have) tinted windows? Anyone had experience with how the tint holds up to repeatedly going in and out of the channel? When I get my front two tinted, I'll probably just have them leave about a 1/4" strip untinted at the top, which will be hidden when the windows are up anyway. Thoughts?

Regarding the 2 negatives...both true.

I added small pieces of double-sided tape to the OUTSIDE of the rear guards. If the tape was on the inside, the window would hit it. Actually, I added this tape to the front guards as well for the added stability (no fluttering). The pieces of tape need to be about 1/8" wide or you will see them from the outside. Black tape would be ideal. I put about 10 pieces across each visor.

As for the window scratching, I have not experienced this yet but figure it may happen. It probably depends how dirty your window is when you put it up. If you wheel your truck, you may experience this sooner (but will probably have other scratches and dents to worry about too).
I'm not really concerned about it though as you won't really see it when the window is up or down - only when it's partial. And even then, it's only the top 1/2".
As for the tint, I was concerned about that. It was one reason why I decided against getting my windows tinted (and it's illegal in PA). I spoke to the window tinter and had front tint with in-channel visors and has not had an issue. He said if I would feel more comfortable, he would stop the tint 1/2" from the top.

I leave my windows cracked everyday at work. We get some pretty nasty T-storms and I have never had evidence of water in the truck. And you can't see that window is cracked from the outside.


A positive...
If I am driving 70mph down the highway, I can open my driver-side window all the way and the rear window halfway (double cab). When the windows are like this, I get little or NO wind in my face. It's also not very loud. I don't know if it was like that before the visors but I LOVE IT. I can't stand driving while getting blasted in the face by wind - gives me a headache.

Great info Veccster....thanks! Very nice looking Taco too. I've been chewing on this for a few days, and have decided that I really like the in-channel look much better than the stick-ons. Since the negatives can be addressed (and may not be considered negatives at all by some), I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a set soon. I'll be sure to use the tape on both windows as you suggested. As far as the scratching, guess I'll just try to keep them clean most of the time and get my tint guy to leave a space across the top. BTW, what kind of cover is that on your ride? I'm thinking of eventually getting one of those too.

i got a set for my 96, my dads 02 off autoanything.com decent company for the tacomas..ordered 2 sets for my gf's dakota and yup, they were both wrong. Even got the part # direct from EGR, WRONG. Finally ordered a set of weathertechs tonight. We'll see if there any better

 

i dont remember exactly where but i got em online. they're all over but autoanything.com looks like they only got double-cab ones, for some reason..
just gotta google.. i got mine for about $60 a while back. looks like theyre a little cheaper now. sorry couldn't be of more help bro..... but good luck

 

Good write up.

But the Ebay ones are the same quality as any of them. All of them are just flexible plastic. I wonder if maybe there is one or two manufacturers in China that make them for all the companies. My Ebay ones looked exactly like the ones Toyota was selling at the Stealer for $120.

I bought the Ebay ones for $40 shipped for 4 windows. I have had them 2 years & no problems.

 

sorry to bring up an old thread, but if you have aftermarket tint (front windows) is it going to scratch it up or is the scratching you speak of only happening to the outside part?

I have been thinking of getting tint but was worried about the same thing.

Actually, I have read up on this and think its only an issue if you off-road in muddy or dusty/dirty conditions. The added pressure of the in-channel visor would push the dirt into the tint and cause the scratching. I don't think normal driving conditions would cause any scratching.

And if you do off-road, you could just avoid putting the window all the way up until you can clean off your window.



As for the above eBay comment, I agree. The quality of the plastic is no different from any other manufacturer. The difference in the EGR Slimline design is the lack of a flared bottom - hence "slimline". I don't understand why some people buy the weathertechs for $125 thinking they are a better quality.

I just installed my Slimline's and they ARE nice.
I also put the Weathertech's on my wifes RAV and I can't see the difference (for the money, both are good).

I thank all here that had input here so I could make a great decision on the ERG Slimlines...

I've had these visors for just about 1 year and have no problems. They work well and look good!

I had to add some double sided tape eliminate vibrations and it worked. Just stick a couple little pieces at the edge that faces away from the cab.

Definitely happy with my purchase.

 

Veccster- do you find yourself using the fronts more than the rears or ? I was wondering because maybe just a set for the fronts would do...might look lame on the double cab though.

 

Actually, in the summer - I can put my front windows down and just crack the back windows to get the right flow. Basically, I hate air blowing constantly in my face. With this flow, air does not blow in my face. It works perfectly.

Maybe that has nothing to do with the back visors...IDK. Otherwise, I agree that just front visors would look a bit odd - unless it's on an access cab.

 

Hi, I am from PR, I just starting at this site. I want to buy the same Slimline in channel vent visor that you show in your picture. I have the same Tacoma 2010, 4x4, 4dr but until now I didn't find this in PR. Please help me find a company that ship to PR.

great write up. just confused do the EGR slimline come in inchannle, or is it the regular EGR in channels, looked up slim line in channel and they say tape on, looking to buy

 

Not impressed with this US Auto Parts place. Ordered the EGRs from them on the 3/25, credit card was billed, have not yet received the item. Sent them an email yesterday, no response yet, will be calling before the end of the day.
