Advice on Fog Lights?

I would like to add some after market fog lights or driving lights to my '00 SR5. Anyone have suggestions for what brand and placement on truck?

 

They're pretty much all good but I LOVEmy Hella 550's (clear drivers) they are really great quality made by a German company that has been making high-intensity lights forever for things like planes, boats,ships-etc. They make fogs too.

 

Those look good. I found some online for about $85 + shipping. Is that a normal price? And, where exactly do you mount them on the Taco? It doesn't look like there is much room under the bumper or behind the slots.

 

You really should get a bullbar to provide a mount. We have the same front end and I was beating my brains out trying to figure a mount-the only possibility I came up with was to drill thru the lower composite portion of the bumper...no way. We DO have these mounting squares way down at the bottom of the bumper (i think they were meant for an extra air dam) they are at 6 points across the bottom. You could mount them down there, but 2 problems come to mind: that area is not sturdy and you'll suffer wind shudder of the lights when you're in motion....AND you take a chance of sheering them off at driveways and offroad.

 

Did you ever get the mount set up? How about some pics?

I saw some round Hella 500's at Wally World this afternoon, but those are a bit bigger than what I was looking for. The ones I saw on the internet were rectangular and I think a better look for me.

I have seen some pics of the round 500's on the top of the front bumper of a Taco. It was a good look for that truck because it was set up for real off road stuff.

Mine is more of a regular truck that gets to go hunting a fishing a few times a year.

With our front ends- square auxilliary lighting looks cooler for some reason-I guess it offsets the roundish features or somethin

 

Oh, I like that! Where did you get your mount? Off topic, did your fender flares come from the factory or did you add them and what do you run for tires?

 

I used Hella 550 rectangular driving lights with Hella amber bulbs (http://www.rallylights.com/hella/550.asp). These are fairly large and have a reflective range of almost a mile; I don't worry about hitting deer or black cows any longer. These completely negate the need for the high beams, but you will need to dim them for on-coming traffic. The amber bulbs are really easy on the eyes and seem to cut through the bad weather with less bounce-back. I have a 99 so the mounting would differ, but a I did a just-under the valence mount using aluminum bar stock running across the frame rails; looks clean as all of the mounting and wiring is hidden by the valence. If you make your own mount, use fairly stout stock or the lights will vibrate. Sorry no camera today.

 

Whatsup 777- thanks...the flares are factory, and the bullbar has ready mounts on it for lights. High Desert has given AWSOME advice on creating a mount-sounds doable for sure! I had to get lights too 'cause our son lives out in Folsom and those country roads out there are DARK and lots of critters too..............by the way,777, the tires are Michelins. I dont go offroad too much atall, so I wanted a nice fat tire with highway tread. Great tires-you're looking at tires with over 45000 miles on them and I still have half the treadlife to go!

 

I just went to the link where High Dessert suggested and it says there that Hella is no longer making many of the repair parts for the 550 series. Is that going to be a problem?

 

That references the 550FF light; a free form reflector version. The standard 550 continues.

I guess nobody's buying the square ones anymore. That sucks! Well all i can say is use your stone guards as much as possible and don't munch them offroad. Do you have a camera today? I have looked at the bull bars, brush guards, lisence plate add ons, etc.... some look great and would work great, others are POC's. But, the good ones are more $ than I'm looking to spend just to add lighting at this point.

I would like to see what you did to make your light mount. I have looked under the front end and think there must be a way to add something there failry inexpensively. There are lots of places to connect something to under there.
