how bout all those people who dont know how to fix their trucks? Should they just "go out and learn firsthand too"?

This is what forums are for. Let the man ask his questions. I drift all the time too but do so in a safe place. This guy does too, on logging roads. There is nowhere else he can get the specs of what hes trying to learn.

Now if he was asking about how it does in a street race, id be more inclined to agree with you.

the trutrac isnt hard on tires at all... i think you probably had a normal detroit locker. i had one of those in my last jeep and it ate tires like crazy. the trutrac isnt a true locker just a limited slip.

I'm highly confused by your question...

    To make it simple:

    1) All 8.4's can be swapped with each other. All 8.4's after 08' are open. Before 08' some are open (SR5) and some have mechanical LSD (option).

    2) All 8.0's can be swapped with each other and are always open.

Model year makes zero difference if it will fit or not.

If you throw a auto LSD from a 2010 into a 2007 thinking you'll have LSD you are sadly wrong. If you throw a mechanical LSD from a pre 09' into a 2010 you will have mechanical LSD.

    Hope that helps...

Thanks. I thought that the 8.0's were available with and without the locker I also thought the only 8.4's were those with the mechanical LSD.
    Thanks for clarifying.

Actually I just read there isn't such thing as an 8.4 anyway. And the only reason for the older axle is still around is for the OR's locker. I've had it confused for a while.

Any OE locked rear will always be open. This is why I would prefer a true mechanical LSD in snow and slick on road driving than a "offroad" Tacoma. Open sucks in snow and so do lockers.

I'm sure someone will chime in on how the electric version of LSD and Atrac are great, but IMHO they suck.

A-TRAC is a LOW RANGE 4WD traction system, so it doesn't apply to LSD talk, IMO. It is more an automatic 'locker' system more than limited slip... since it matches tire rotation across an axle, and not just limits rotation. Grades that required my 2005 Tacoma rear locker to climb I could do easier with A-TRAC on my 2010... since it works the front too.

I agree with sKiP on this one. In my experience a mechanical lsd is better in snow and slick conditions than alsd and trac control. Thats why in the next few weeks I will be installing one in my '12.

If you turn the VSC off you can do donuts all day long. Ask me how I know...

Edit: I don't really know if you can do them all day... Gotta stop for gas and to take a leak at some point.

Where are you buying a TRD Off Road for 40K in Canada? I'm curious because your pricing seems high. Are you in the GTA or Vancouver where auto prices tend to be higher and taxes are criminal?

I live in Southern Alberta and there are no Off Road Double Cabs available new in Canada anymore. The Off Road Package is still available on the Access Cabs new though and I have a friends who have walked away with one for 33 K taxes in. If that''s what you're looking for then you should be able to get a better deal on a truck then 40 K.

When I did a deal on my Tacoma TRD Sport I was something like 36-37 K taxes in CAD. I could of had an Off Road for about 500 bucks less. I think you need to grind down your dealer a bit more on your pricing.

I'm just going by list price, the truck you have is $34,500 here with no options added plus $7200 tax, freight and PDI. That is rediculous for a 3/4 scale truck. You can get a tarted up 5.0L or Ecoboost F-150 extended cab for that much without even haggling.

So I'm not even entertaining the idea of a new one. I'll hang on to the Ranger and continue towing with my Rav4 if I can't find a used Tacoma that isn't rusted all the way through. The 08 Rav4 has towed a race car on a trailer and it only cost me $13k three years ago, but is in better shape than any used Tacoma of half the mileage I've looked at. I guess the only people who get rid of Tacomas are people who beat the crap out of them. We might be getting a little off topic here :)
