Can't legislate morality, even if we try to legislate morality.

I'm all for a law that makes it illegal to smoke around children. I'm also all for not making this common sense parenting practice a LAW when it should be pretty obvious, unfortunately, we're (society) composed up of 73% fuckwits who have no business attempting procreation nor driving, for that matter.

Like all other automobile laws, like don't leave your kid inside and the windows rolled up, seat belts must be used, no cell phones, etc,. this law, too, will be ignored by the larger masses and will end up putting money in some account somewhere instead of solving anything, so in essence, it's a complete waste of time and effort. XXXX is right, dumb people are the problem, dumb laws don't fix them.

While I agree that it's a disgusting habit, you shouldn't support a law just because it doesn't affect you personally...

You really want to save the children.....stop this from happening through education:

Each day, more than 3,200 persons younger than 18 years of age smoke their first cigarette (1,168,000 per year).

Each day, an estimated 2,100 youth and young adults who have been occasional smokers become daily cigarette smokers (766,500 per year).

I "get" you guys "think" a new law will save lives, but IMHO it's nothing but legislators posturing for the media.

    Who, me?
Occasionally a cigar, when I'm camping or fishing. I probably spend $20 a year on tobacco products, in the interest of full disclosure.

Like I said just stirring the pot. If we're disclosing I spend $20 a week, probably more if my alcohol intake is high like during vacation times. No more laws please.

If you don't care, then why are you here discussing it with us? Just sayin. :p (meant in humor man) And please don't try to bring racism into the mix. Besides, can you support your theory that they smoke the most? Actually I went to the CDC and looked it up. Here are the numbers:

    By Race/Ethnicity2

    Race/Ethnicity Prevalence American Indian/Alaska Natives (non-Hispanic) 21.8% Asians (non-Hispanic) 10.7% Blacks (non-Hispanic) 18.1% Hispanics 12.5% Whites (non-Hispanic) 19.7% Multiple Races (non-Hispanic) 26.1%

    By Sex2

Sex Prevalence Men 20.5% Women 15.8%

So by your theory, it would be the American Indians

I NEVER in any way shape or FORM advocated that ANYONE should take a child away from a parent just because they are smoking in a car with them. Funny how a few posts back you talk about me putting words in YOUR mouth, don't you do the same.

And I do agree that education is important, and we ARE educating our children. But even an educated child cannot FORCE their parent to not smoke in the car with them.

Can you please show data supporting your numbers? Not accusing you of falsifying numbers, but when people start quoting numbers I think they should also link where they got them from.

It is not me "thinking" that a new law saves lives. It is show that many new laws save lives. I know this will sound extreme, but are you implying that any law that cannot be PROVEN to save a life is not needed? How many lives are worth a new law? 1 child? 100? 1000? So should we start calculating out like the military with "acceptable losses" before we enact a law?

Look, I am all about your right to smoke and drink if you want. But when your smoking and drinking affects other people's lives, then something needs to be done.

ON a side note, at the moment of this post, 100 people voted, 80 support a law, 19 are against, and 1 abstained. So it comes to a nice even percentage as well. 80%/19%/1%

If your really going to fight for this and support it I think it's noble. I wouldn't say its a waste of time, but there are far worse things that need to be taken care of in my opinion...like salt. 90% of kids eat to much of it and heart attack is #1 killer of fat ass kids....all true stats from the CDC :D

The home page of the CDC talks about salt not smoke...just saying...

Edit: Also people who are suicidal (smokers) tend not to care what the law says. These laws are trying to tell someone who is killing themselves that they shouldn't do something... Pretty sure they already don't GAF.

Also when you want to fact check me - don't waste my time asking. Simply copy my quote, place it in google, & hit enter....walla

    To play Devil's Advocate:

You could make the argument that a law (presumably fining) a person for smoking while in the presence of a child could amount to class warfare.

Statistically speaking, the majority of smokers come from lower-income, lower-education demographics. By placing an additional financial burden on them in the forms of fines and/or jail time (not to mention associated legal fees) it will serve to further increase the divide between classes.

Just one more way the oligarchy is keeping its subjects in place. :spy:

Did you take into account how much that same state pay's out for the medical treatment of smoking related illness. I doubt very much that the 38 million dollars is as much of a windfall as you seem to be making it out to be. The less people exposed to smoke then the less chance of people who suffer smoking related disease. This is not about individual choice as these decisions affect people both directly and indirectly to where you choose to smoke. Your right to smoke does not override my right to not be affected by your smoke.

It is so hard to quote a person when they are editing inside another person's quotes...lol. But there we go.
